    Hello Geeks,
Here is my system specs from belarc advisor: HP Pavilion 6638, OS 98 SE, 533 MHz Celeron CPU, Maxtor HDD(15.37GB) 13.59 free space, Conexant SoftK56 PCI modem, Trigem Cognac MOBO, Phoenix BIOS, 192MB memory, Local Drive Volumes c:(on drive 0)???, Multimedia Crystal Audio Codec, and under Other Devices Conexant PCI Modem Enumerator???, USB Root Hub???.
I am trying to install XP, I have used Upgrade Advisor and Device Driver Toolkit. Upgrade Advisor states I will have hardware conflicts with my modem and Crystal Audio Codec Game Device, Sound, video and game controllers. I have all the latest drivers for these devices using the driver toolkit. I had sound when I installed XP but I could not get the necessary software downloads because I kept getting disconnected from the internet I would like to know what modem and the Crystal Audio Codec (sound card???) I could upgrade to using this mobo. I am using dial up for my connection as of now and if I upgrade to say DSL do I need another modem?
The mobo has three PCI slots, no AGP slot, two USB ports. one PCI slot is now being used by the modem now installed. I would like to know what the Conexant PCI Modem Enumerator is?. Should I upgrade at all?? What are the most logical upgrades?? I have read the article: a little trigem mobo by Donovan and I get some insight but not enough for a novice(private) And before I forget when I did install XP my keyboard worked but my mouse did not work, there was a cursor stuck in the center of the screen. Could someone please square this private away. Thanks bluesteinm

being that I've been out of the modem world since 99, I can't offer much advice but I can tell you that if you upgrade to DSL or cable you will no longer need a model. You will have to purchase a Network Card in its' place. If you have questions on that, I can help you there ;)

hello Kodo, thanks for replying. I will try anything in order to run XP on my system.
You say i will not need a modem for DSL, that I need a NIC? How about just a modem for dial up. Say I just contact my ISP and get a modem for their DSL? Could you tell me why my mouse would not work?

Just curious, but have you tried deleting the modem in Device Manager and rebooting. This would allow Windows to redetect the device and apply a driver that it thinks would work? Another approach would be to go to Rockwell's website, as they make the modems ( or so I believe ) and look for a compatabile driver there, or see if HP has a Win 2000 driver available.

I ran into the same problem that you are having on two older Emachine computers that I have. Do a web search for Crystal Audio and you should come up with a driver that will work. I wish that I could remember specifics, but I've been on broadband for almost three years! Hope this helps! ;)
