    Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop, it currently has 1GB of ram and a 60GB hard drive and running windows XP.

I was wanting to upgrade this to 2GB ram (apparently that's the limit for this laptop) and a 120GB hard drive.

My first question is if this is worth it (cost wise).

Second question is how hard is it to upgrade the ram and the hard drive (also can I copy my old hard drive over to the new one?)

And my third question is do I need a special type of ram or hard drive to work with the system I have?

    Thanks :)

RAM is always a good investment to up performance and life of a PC. Its not hard to install. I prefer to use Crucial or Corsair online memory config tools. You allow them to run and active x program to see what your PC is capable of an currently has then it will recommend their product.

I have not upgraded hard drives for laptops but you will need to reload your OS to the new one. You could copy your exitsing files to an external or get and external enclosure to put your old one in and get them that way. Still make a good back up first.

To try to answer your questions:
It depends on what you use your computer for.
ie. gaming takes a lot more RAM then doing spreadsheets

    If you go to:
    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins6000/en/sm/index.htm
you can view step by step instructions for replacing each.

There are several programs available to help you accomplish this

    Type DRAM

    Technology DDR II SDRAM

    Form Factor SO DIMM 200-pin

    Memory Speed 667 MHz ( PC2-5300 )

    Data Integrity Check Non-ECC

    RAM Features Unbuffered

    Module Configuration 128 x 64

A fairly common and inexpensive module.

Thanks so much for your help guys, just found out that both my memory card slots are taken up so I'll be replacing both to get the max 2GB ram but just wondering what's the difference between

    DDR2-533 (PC2-4200) SODIMM
    and
    DDR II SDRAM 667 MHz ( PC2-5300 )

I was on the corsair website and it says this is my information 400/533MHz FSB, Intel 915GM/PM Chipset.

    Thanks in advance!

Both are DDR2, the differance is speed, 533Mhz is a bit slower than 667Mhz.
