Upgrading Ram, do I need to update my BIOS?

I just bought some ram for my computer, and I'm about to put it in, but crucial.com where I bought it from says it is necessary to update my BIOS first. Due to the complications this could cause, is it really necessary?

I'm about to put in a new video card too, do I need to update the BIOS for that too?

is the ram the same as what you have installed allready pc100, pc133, ddr2100 and so on?

 

Since you bought from Crucial, I'm assuming you used there online memory conf tool that matched up your existing memory to their stuff. I like crucial and have bought memory from them three times and never had a problem. AND each time I did not update/upgrade my BIOS. Memory and Video cards are pretty easy to do (most things are these days thanks to Plug and Play).

Just do one upgrade at a time, creating restore points along the way. I'd start with memory. Try you system out and then do the Video card. Good Luck.

Yeah I used the memory finder program crucial had, both are pc2100.

Is there any advantage to updating my BIOS, will it make my computer run faster?

 

Manufacturer (PC or MOBO) for info on the BIOS, it should say what the update does and what it fixed or support what added. My PC is three years old and there has only been one update which fixed a random DHCP error @ start up. I can't see it or even know about it unless I go poking into the Event Viewer looking for problems.

Download and run Everest Home edition (if you haven't) its a very easy way to gather info on what BIOS version you have. Compare it to what the Manufacturer's site, you may be current anyway.

The computer only runs as fast as the Processor and Front Side Bus will allow it to process the information. Updating the Bios only solves problems that the manufacturer has found and needs to be corrected.
