I presently have XP and sometime in the distant future will upgrade to Win 7. I have used the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor and found out that I have 4 or 5 apps that will need updating. Should I go ahead and update them now or wait till I get ready for Win 7? Will updating them now affect their operations?

    Thanks!

Upgrading your apps now would probably mean a new purchase and you may may want to review them to see the cost. Since you have XP on your rig, then your machine is getting a tad long in the tooth.

Are you entertaining the idea of getting a new machine within the next year? If so, then I'd stick with XP as there's no real advantage to having W7 now as opposed to XP, W7's a good OS but not worth the money to buy for an aging machine IMO. What's a home premium OEM cost now, about $120USD? Also, OEM editions are not supposed to be transferred to a new machine.

Another thought is I believe there is no direct upgrade option from XP to Win7. You have to do a fresh install. All your old files are put into a folder like Windows.old so you don't lose documents, pictures etc. but Programs/Applications have to be re-installed. So if I am correct about that then no point in upgrading programs now as you will want the latest releases when you install Win7.

What you need to ask yourself is "Why should I upgrade to Windows 7?" By running adviser you have just found out that it will cost you some additional monies beyond the cost of the operating system to upgrade.

If you are not planning any brand new hardware or some new application that can take advantage of some new Windows 7 features....then stay where you are. Windows XP is a very good operating system and will be around a long time.
