hey a friend of mine bought a new computer with Win Vista and I'm now trying to upgrade it from Vista to xp. and I was wondering if i could format the C Drive from My computer -> C:\ -> properties -> format disc and install XP directly after that without doing anything else?

    Check for the drivers first.

Make sure you don't need SATA drivers. I know XP will not read my drive due to lack of drivers on CD.

Other than that--if you get a green light there, should be fine. Not sure why you are calling it an upgrade, though.

Well, you could boot off the XP CD and see if it sees the drive.

I'd just play it safe and look for drivers first, gather them, THEN install.

well i've tried to run the XP Disc but while it's loading everything (before the install) i get a message: The file usbuhci.sys is corrupted. press any key to continue and then the computer restarts. i don't have any problem with using this disc to install Xp on a computer which have xp already.

Go to the makers site first to see if there are XP drivers as more and more machines do not have them. If available then since your friend has SATA, integrate the driver first using nLite. There are tons of posts here about the issue.

Is this a burned XP CD?

Well, one could assume its a pirated copy, but I will just leave it at this.

Its probably a bad burn, or a poor quality CD. Use the original media and a legal key.

If not genuine, we cannot help--

Vista caused me problems when I first tried to install XP, after it was installed, and I had a job formatting to get it clean enough, as it can, occasionally mess up the mbr of the hard drive- so I had to work on it to make it instal, but others seem to manage - You could use the Vista CO to create another partition on your hard drive, and then instal XP on the other partition- remembering Adrenalyn's point, on sata drivers.
Easiest way is to go to the motherboard/computer manufacturers site, first, and see if it supports XP - Some newer one's no longer do, as Audiedoggie says.
