as Geek*GHZ said above depends on type and size, what files were they and then we can give you a clearer answer?

did you also recieve any error messages?

They were screenshots. BMP files of 3.6 mbs.

max file sizes for images are 97.7kb, so i think your going to have to JPEG them to a smaller size, plus it's a good netiquette thing to do for the members that are on Dial-up as a 3.6mb image or a collection of them attached would load fairly slow.

How do I convert files to JPEGs?

Open up the images in your favored graphics/image software and choose "save as" and in the "save as type" drop down box choose JPEG,JPG.

Software options that spring to mind are if you dont have any.. are,

MS Paint ( built into the OS )
    Paint .NET
    XNView
    Ifanview
    The GIMP

I practiced converting bmps to different formats. I couldn't tell any differences in qualty, although I thought the bmp files were clearer than the jpegs. The jpegs are files are significantly smaller. When, if ever, would a quality issue arise?

Yes BMPs will be clearer than JPEGs as they are a lossless format, unlike Jpeg which does the more you edit the file loose quality, jpegs are good for emailing, posting on forums etc but the lossless formats of BMP, PSD etc are best for archiving.

I would keep if you want quality the BMPs but when the need arises convert the image to jpeg for emailing posting if high quality is not needed, if you are converting and the GFX app allows you to choose the compression for jpegs ( photoshop does ) still keep the compression at highest level ( 12 on PS ).
