I have a unique problem that has me completely beat. I can't find anything on google, chatrooms, message boards, etc. I hope the experts here will be able to figure it out, because like I said, I can't.

Okay, so I am running WindowsXP pro with an Asus A7V333 motherboard, 512mb of ram, amd 2400+ cpu, and two nic cards (SMC1244TX, SMC1211).

One card is connected to my lynksys router, along with another computer, for internet access. My other card is connected directly to another computer via crossover cable behind the firewall. This other computer has an ftp server and is configured correctly.

To make this easier to understand, I will number them as follows:
#1. My computer (SMC1244TX) connected to the router for internet access.
#2. My computer (SMC1211) connected to ftp server (#3).
#3. FTP server connected to my computer behind the firewall.
#4. Another computer running XP connected to the router for internet access, ect.

My problem was discovered when I tried uploading files from my computer to #3. The file will start uploading, but it'll stop at somthing like 90%, 60%, 40%, etc. (depending on which ftp client I use). The ftp client doesn't give an error because it thinks 100% of the file was transfered. I have tried using cuteftp, leapftp, flashfxp, filezilla, and even windows explorer before ruling out ftp client is the problem.

    Interesting things to note:

    - downloading works 100% of the time from #3 to #2 and from the internet to #1.

    - uploading small files (<100k for example) almost always works. >100k - problems begin.

    - uploading from #1 to the internet has the same problem.

    - I've tried uploading with p2p networks and mirc and discovered uploads either fail or die off as well.

    - downloading and uploading files between #1 and #4 is working 100% of the time.

    - Mysteriously, I am able to upload with Dreamweaver to my website with little or no problems. However larger files can't be tested due to their server's lack of space.

    - ip addresses:
    #1 - ip - 192.168.1.100
    snm - 255.255.255.0
    gateway - 192.168.1.1
    #2 - ip - 192.168.0.1
    snm - 255.255.255.0
    gateway - none
    #3 - ip - 192.168.0.3
    snm - 255.255.255.0
    gateway - none

I don't know what else to say, besides maybe I haven't tested uploads from #4 to the internet since it's not really my computer. I've downloaded Knoppix to try ftping with a linux based OS without having to create a new linux based partition. I can't even get it to boot properly though. (I'm flooded with errors saying "error on cpu0: 02(02)") That's a whole other issue. My main concern is to get my uploads working.

Good luck, I think I gave enough info so I hope somebody can make sense of this. Thank you for your help.

have you tried it from the command prompt?

Good idea, i never thought of that.

I used command prompt to upload via ftp and the same thing happens. It claims the whole file was transfered, but there are a few kilobytes less in each large file I moved. The smaller files (3.11kb as one example) uploaded perfectly.

have you tried plugging the FTP server into your router and then testing?

I've tried uploading to other servers online, and the larger files are incomplete.

So I tried booting up into Knoppix and I was finally able to get some complete uploads on the go. This supports my theory that Windows was the cause of the problem. There seems to be a growing list of windows related problems lately.

I'm glad to have a workaround for this problem, however, it would be nice to be able to use my favorite ftp client (cuteftp) and not have to reboot my system into linux just to upload to my server.

What do you guys think? Will I need to reinstall windows, or can somebody think of a way to fix this?

(I can't simply repair the installation because my system is suffering from bit-rot and it freezes during the repair process.)

    maybe NIC drivers?

imo just plug all comps directly to the router and do port forwarding directly to the ftp...

NAT provides some basic firewall to machines connected to the router

if you want a more *secure* network, just install software firewall on every machine and that's it

or maybe is just that your connection to the internet *times out*???!?!?

    dsl or cable?

have you tried to update the firmware on your router?

Thanks to everyone who tried to help. I've been booting into linux to transfer my files. It's irritating, but at least it works.

<Kodo> - I forgot to mention in my original post that I did update the drivers for both nic cards. It didn't do anything.

<wizard> - I have a cable connection. I'm not sure if it's timing out or not. It doesn't give up after x amount of time, rather it quits just before it's supposed to. For example if I upload a 50mb file, it will end at 49.x mb which takes many minutes. However If I upload a 1mb file, it will end at 0.9x mb and it's done in seconds. Files < 1mb I can usually upload fully.

I would prefer not to connect my server to my router (The server never needs to access the internet, and nobody from the internet needs to access my server;) ).
I did test uploading through the router to an ftp site online, but still the filesize didn't match mine after it was done. (It's not just the difference between the filesize and the size on disk either, I downloaded it back and it was corrupt.)

Doc Evil, did you ever get this sorted? I mean, are you still having to boot into Linux before uploads?

I'm experiencing a similar problem but not exactly.

About four days ago I became unable to reliably upload to websites I'm working on via ftp of any sort. I tested WS_ftp, Cute_ftp, directly through Dreamweaver, through IE etc..

In my situation it's isolated to my router or dsl modem.... I installed an ftp client on my husband's laptop and it didn't work either so I hauled my computer to the local wireless cafe and Voila! I can upload there, no problems at all.

What would cause a wireless router or a DSL modem to suddenly interfere with ftp uploads? Downloading, viewing pages, getting email is all fine.

It's a Belkin wireless router model # f5d7231. The DSL modem is a Westell Wirespeed I got in November through dsl extreme. My laptop is a Dell with XP.

    Any clues?
