Upping WiFi Security/Protection

I don't see anything addressed here the past couple years regarding this topic, so I'd like to ask (because I'm getting VERY nervous [more nervous all the time] connecting to wifi hotspots) :

Will these two programs help? Might they conflict with each other (running them simultaneously), please?
