I am looking to replace my APC Smart UPS 700 that I have on my Linux server. It always ran hot (over 100F) so I eventually moved the batteries outside the case to extend their life and that seemed to help until recently. It has not even been a year since I replaced the batteries this last time and their capacity appears to be way down. A check of the charging voltage indicates the UPS is now charging at nearly 28V which is probably a contributing factor. I was hoping there was an adjustment to reset the voltage lower but I don’t see one and APC is not very helpful and that is being kind. As a result I am looking for a non APC replacement.

Ideally it would be have the following specs.

    1. 600 watts plus or minus
    2. Actual sine wave output
    3. Automatic Voltage Regulation
    4. Run cool
    5. Have an adjustment for the charging voltage
    6. Linux software for remote monitoring through a web interface with the ability to automatically provide an orderly shutdown before battery exhaustion.

Information on items one, two, and three I can obtain from the manufacturer’s spec. sheets but I doubt if there is much information on items four and five except from people who actually own a UPS. I also doubt if there is much chance for number six but it doesn’t hurt to ask. I am currently using upsstats.cgi to monitor the APC UPS.

Anyone have any suggestions based on personal experience. Thanks

How much are you looking to spend? Number 5 sounds like it will drive up the cost quite a bit, if it exists.

You may want to do some research on CyberPower's pure sine wave series.

I have a larger version of the one in the link and am very happy with it. Not sure about the adjustable voltage and Linux, though.

Thank you both for taking the time to reply. I will look at the CyberPower web site. Does the unit you are using have the ability to monitor the internal temperature and have you noted what it is under normal conditions if it does? Did you receive a schematic with the accompanying paperwork when you purchased it?

As for the adjustable voltage requirement, I was not really looking for an external adjustment as a feature but only a trim pot or similar adjustment internally that would allow easy maintenance if it went out of spec. If that was not available their support department should at least make a schematic available that the end user could peruse to determine which fixed value components might have changed values. APC is not very helpful in that regard.

With regard to cost, I have not established a must not exceed price. I am more concerned with finding a unit that will be easy to maintain, works well, and where the manufacturer has a support department that will work with the owner. That is not APC.
