hi guys,..okim some what of a computer technician and i know what im doing when it comes to various things anyway,.....the task at hand

recently i was asked service a DELL PC system,,,...its at least 2yrs old or more,....anyway my friend wanted me to service it and put on software etc.
i did that and when the computer tried to update to XP Home Ed. SP3 it froze as my friend lives in a rural area and his broadband is kinda iffy,.....anyway i tried all the proper methods like bringing up the task manager and alt+tabbing out but to no avail,.......anyway i ended up turning the PSU off at the back,....as the Pc Froze comlpetely,..

i was lucky enough to get the blue screen of death,.....anyway i ended up reformatting the PC:cry

i did it perfectly installing the sound drivers and so on and it worked fine and because it was reformatted it was obviously faster,..i also put on an anti-virus,anti malware and anti-spyware onto the system,,......i connected my mobile broadband to the computer so as to update the various programs and windows to a certain extent,........anyway i un-installed my software for the mobile broadband and it turned out i was missing a driver for modem on mainboard,......so i got the 'origional cd' installed the software but to no avail yet again,...so i did it again and i restarted the system this time but AGAIN to no avail

so I then installed 'Driver Magician' which in the past has never let me down for Downloading drivers and so on,......anyway i got my friend( who was getting fairly pissed at this stage due to the frustration of the computer) to install the drivers himself so as to give him a piece of mind,..and AGAIN to no avail,...we then used driver magician to download the the driver for the modem and AGAIN to no avail,..it didnt work,........anyway the internet aint working at all,..and i need a few suggestions as to get it working as the drivers simply wont install,......

I also right clicked on 'my computer' and then went to 'manage' and then went to 'device manager' and then went down to the yellow question mark where it said something like 'ethernet Controller' and the then i right clicked on that and went to 'update driver' and it didnt work,......

Also there is no need to restart the modem as the internet is coming through as my friend has his laptop hooked up to it via wireless!!!!!!!

the fact that it is DELL and DELL are one of the most akward computer companies out there as they make F***k of everything,..but all that aside,...any and all help would be appreciated and takin into consideration!!!!!!

    thanks again

So you can't get a driver to load - I think that's what you're trying to say. :confused

Try going to the device manager and deleting the device so when windows redetects it on reboot you can point it in the direction of the driver on the original CD.

right never thought of that,.......so bascially delete the device so when i reboot ill get 'new harware found' and then i can look for the driver myself very smart!!!!!do u have any other suggestions!???

Dell will have the exact driver on their website if you use the number on the service tag attached to the side of the PC(not the model number but use the tag number it will identify the proper ethernet card). Dell drivers are in EXE form so the install should be a matter of double clicking.

yh thats very true but thats where driver magician comes in,.......it gave me a DL URl and it was from the dell site itself except it skips all the BS and just lets you DL the driver ya know,........!!!!!!!!

Thanks, I'll have to look into Driver Magician. I had just recently reformatted my father's Dell and realized that they list several ethernet cards for his model but the service tag narrowed it down to the correct one.

Is your friend trying to use broadband or dial-up? Just a question because my dad's had a 56k modem and a separate ethernet card for broadband.
