I have to solve this URGENT matter in the morning:

I have a set top box in my living room with my TV. It is connected with a 25 meters long cable CAT 5e, to a wireless modem through my veranda. The modem is in my office, connected to my desktop. It will be easy and they work ok. if they are close to one another, until 8.5 meters (the company says…)

It is impossible to have them closer than this (25 m), due to other modem connections I have in my office.

PLEASE HELP ME …. !! HOW CAN THIS WORK ??

    URGENT HELP KINDLY REQUESTED…

    Thanks,
    Maggie

Not too sure that I understand what the problem is - are you saying that you need your "set top box" (which I assume must be an IP-enabled TV tuner???) within 8.5m of your modem?

If so, do you know why? I thought CAT5 didn't degrade the signal too much until 67m or so. Maybe this device needs a better signal. If that's the case, a repeater (hub/switch) might help improve the distance. Kind of a messy solution, but it should amplify your signal across the distance at least a little.

Taking into consideration the ambiguity of the problem, this is the best answer.

    Hi,

I'm not quite sure what you're asking: You seem to be saying that you cannot connect your set top box to a wireless modem via a 25m cable? And that it works if the cable is less than 8.5m long?

    However, I don't understand this:

"It is impossible to have them closer than this (25 m), due to other modem connections I have in my office."

I don't understand how your other modem connections impact on this, please?

I'm going to take a huge leap here, and assume there's a translation issue, and you're actually talking about a wireless access point, with Ethernet interfaces... and the reason that you can't move that access point closer to the set top box is because the other connections in your home are also hard-wired, and they cannot be extended due to physical constraints (e.g. their cables are too short).

That being the case, and, assuming that the issue is that, for some reason, the set top box cannot communicate over 8.5m over Ethernet (for reasons I cannot surmise) - one "cheap and sleazy" solution is: Buy a cheap 4-port Ethernet switch... connect the 25m cable to its uplink port from the access point across the veranda... then, connect a cable that is less than 8.5m in length to another port, and then connect that cable to the set top box.

That should take care of it, assuming my assumptions are correct :)

    Regards,

    dj
