UrgenT HELP!

I need urgent help this is what's up
So here's the deal. I'm using XP. My computer has started to turn off (and not reboot) randomly for the past couple of months. I can be doing anything from writing a paper. Watching something on Winamp and playing solitaire. Listening to music. There is no error message. I've run Norton scans, and I've even gone to PCpitstop.com and run tests there. I'm not sure what to do or what the problem could be. Oh and if I try to turn it on a few seconds after it's shut down, it starts to boot up, but just turns off again. I usually have to wait a few minutes or more in order to use the computer for longer periods of time.

 

It might be overheating. Go to the bois and check the temp, if it is high? say 60c or more? check the hardware, make sure all fans are working, CPU is seated correctly, clean any dust from components, take out RAM, Videocard and PCI cards and clean the gold fingers with a lint free cloth and clean out their slots.

 

Is this a Desktop or Laptop??? But I agree with bowrabob does sound like a "Overheat" issue you might want to try "Everest" to take a look at Temps and Voltages link http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

 

I could also be the power supply unit, they tend to get flaky like that. One way to tell which one is doing it is if it is the CPU you won't get the "Windows was improperly shut down" message, whereas with the PSU you will. At least, that has been my experience.

 

Heat if it's a laptop, you can hear the fan kick into high though, might just need to blow, vacuum, clean out. Our old did that in safe mode, especilly during a defrag or scan.
Cleaning made all the difference, although it was a bit of a sticky wicket with a laptop.
Could just be a short somewhere too.
Checked event viewer? It might shed some light on the problem.
