usb 160gb harddrive

    I have a Verbatim 160gb usb harddrive, when I connect it to my usb port on
    my computer I do not get a drive letter. I get a message saying it is installed
    and ready to use, but I cannot see it.

    Hi

    Which Windows version?

    Have you checked to see if in Disk Management that the drive shows if it does not in My Computer?

    Try a different USB port and also unplus any other USB devices apart from criticals like Keyboard and Mouse.

    Is this drive a brand new unformatted one (did think all externals came formatted)? if so then you may need to partition and format it so that it gains a drive letter, but dont do this if drive is OK and viewable in other PCs or has your data on it.

    Also do you use and run a Microsoft tool called TweakUI? if you do then this has the option of hiding drive letters from use, if you do have TweakUI installed then the option is My Computer > Drives and tick them all.

    Windows xp
    Tried 3 different usb ports, same results.
    Drive is new, no info on it and I need to format it with fat32
    How can I format it if I don"t see it?
