Our USB 2.0 driver seems to be missing. When I check under Device Manager, it says it is working properly, but when I plug anything into the USB port, it doesn't work.

I tried going to Microsoft multiple times but am getting nowhere.

    We are running Windows XP.

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks

    Has it ever worked?

PC? Try turning off at the wall for half a minute or so.

Laptop? Try: remove battery and power cord, hold ON button down for 30 seconds, then reconnect.

Next option is to uninstall the USB drivers, and reboot. It will reinstall automatically.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

If those don't work, do this:

Download and install Everest, a free system information tool.

Run Everest and click Report (top menu) > Report Wizard > Next - Choose System Summary Only > Next - Choose Plain Text > Finish and wait for report to generate.
Click Save to File and leave the File Name as Report, then click the Save as Type dropdown and choose Report files (*txt) - click Save (n.b. Save to desktop, use Browse to locate desktop).

Then attach your log to your next post per these instructions: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post.

It only seems to read an MP3. If we attach our digital camera, cell phone etc.. it will not recognize it's there. It used to work for these though. I will run Everest and post again.

    Thank you.

Here is the report from Everest. I do not see anything unusual.

Is this the same machine as in this thread?

Why did you start another thread?

Because I wasn't sure if I posted in my old thread if anyone would see it. I have been working for days on my own trying to get this darn thing to read our cameras and stuff again. Don't understand what could make it all the sudden stop doing that.

I am wondering if the USB port could have just gone bad. If we just buy a new one would that work?

We have an external hard drive that now when I plug it into the USB port, there is no longer any power going to it. We have extra USB ports on the back of the computer, they work for the mouse, keyboard, printer, but not for anything else.

Do you have Service Pack 3 (or at least SP2) installed?

    You could try this:
In the Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers > USB Root Hub > Power Management, Uncheck the box: Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Uncheck all boxes on all root hubs. Then restart after fully turning off the power. It's a bit of a long shot, but it's easy to do.

Also try this (from a MS website):

Use Device Manager to scan for hardware changes. After your computer scans for hardware changes, it might recognise the USB device that is connected to the USB port so that you can use the device.

To scan for hardware changes, follow these steps (with the USB device connected, and you will need Administrator privileges)):
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.

Note If you are running Windows Vista, click Start, and then use the Start Search box.
    2. Type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK. Device Manager opens.
    3. In Device Manager, click your computer so that it is highlighted.
    4. Click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes.
    5. Check the USB device to see whether it is working.
Do the mouse and keyboard work in the front ports?

I tried all that stuff and nothing helps. Thinking we are going to try purchasing new ports/card for them.

Mouse and keyboard DID work when placed in the front USB port. Strange....

Do you have a card? The front ports probably run straight off the motherboard, so if they're not working, it's probably not a card problem.
I wonder if it could be your power supply running out of puff...
As you implied, I think, it's the higher power items that are failing. Would you happen to have a USB hub with its own power supply you could try? That would possibly answer the question.
Come to think of it, your printer has its own power supply, and that works.

It might be of use to check the voltage readings from Sensor in Everest. Maybe post them here - someone who knows a bit about it might be able to help (that's not me, although there is a bit of info about this on the net).
