USB 2.0 problems

After much trawling through pages of threads and googling until I'm blue in the face, maybe you guys can help me?

I recently did a reformat and reinstall of XP Pro, and when plugging in a usb flash drive into the front side hub, my computer did a rather unexpected thing - it read the device as a usb 2.0 device and not 1.1.

Why is this unexpected? Well, since I've had my PC, I have taken it as read that my usb ports front and back don't support USB 2.0 and that I am stuck with laggy 1.1.

After this glimmer of hope was received and during the complete installation of many devices and programs, the ports have decided to resort back to their old ways and I get bombarded with "this device can run faster" messages, only for them to report back that I have no Hi-Speed host controllers.

So, like I said, I began to google about USB 2.0 and I checked Device Manager and I have 2 entries for USB controllers, one of which being a PCI Class USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller and USB 2.0 Root Hub Device! The other one comprises of a root hub and a Standard OpenHCD USB host controller (1.1?).

I have tried updating the drivers for both these devices to no avail, they both indeed update, but nothing changes! I have even used a third party driver to get some action, but that didn't work either.

One other thing I have checked is the BIOS to see if USB is enabled. According to the values it is both enabled for 1.1 and 2.0. And I have also enabled USB for keyboards and mice (even though I'm using ps/2).

I'm starting to tear my hair out over this, as I use many USB devices such as Webcam, Flash Drive, Printer and Bluetooth Dongle. Rest assured they all function - but rather slowly as you'd expect from usb 1.1.

Sorry for the essay, but I have tried to give as much info as possible, and by all means field any questions/suggestions that could help me get to the bottom of my problem.

    Thanks in advance.

is it possible that the front usb ports are 1.1 and the back are 2?
i nkow on a lot of older pcs USB2 was only on the back connectors, while all other headers coming off the mobo (the ones that your front ports would most likely plug into) were USB1.1

you can always try going into hardware manager and deleting all the USB ports then select 'scan for new hardware items' (they will reinstall automatically)

    ALSO.... do you have SP2?
because SP1 doesnt natively support USB2.0

    Thanks for the reply.

I too thought that there would be a direct correlation between front and back being 1.1 and 2.0, but if anything, it's the other way around.

When I plugged in my flash drive, it was in the front side and additionally, I have tried every single port (front and back) in order to get it to recognize as 2.0, but still no joy.

I have tried your suggestion about uninstalling once before, but I will try again.

And yes, I am running XP Pro with SP2.

OK, so I have tried your reinstalling suggestion, but I have again what I had before. I've also done yet more googling and I'm slightly concerned about my Enhanced Controller as it seems pretty generic and I wouldn't know the best place to attempt to get it updated, driver-wise as it isn't branded.

I have included a quick screen grab of the relevant part of my device manager, as I'm also a little concerned that the two controllers have separate listings. See below :

Thanks in advance for any help given.

Thanks for all the advice and help, baklogic.

I have determined that my motherboard is a WinFast NF4UK8AA.

Using the utilities that I downloaded, I have revealed the following from Everest:

    http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/9/21/231493/everest.jpg

I'm not sure if there is any significance with the USB symbol being purple, but after all, this is the device I cannot get to work.

Using the Driverguide Toolkit, I did manage to find the correct driver I need to update my existing Enhanced Controller, but the following happened during setup:

Naturally, I am able to provide you with a lot more diagnostic info as required, so I am hopeful I can once again be pointed in the right direction.

Thanks for the continued support :)

Did you try to update driver by double clicking the EHCI usb controller ?
If not try that-- double click the EHCI usb controller, properties,, update driver, and direct it to the driver you downloaded.
    Otherwise

If you double click the controller, properties, uninstall driver, then shut down, and restart, it will , often, reinstallon reboot, or search for driver- if it searches, direct it to the downloaded file - if not, I have found the following for you.

Difficult to find a manual download, as it comes with motherboard on cd.:cry

baklogic, thank you so much for the support!

Here's the good news - I have fixed the problem, but it wasn't so typically straight-forward.

After checking all the Microsoft support guides, I couldn't find an article that was specific to my problem, even though virtually all the articles hinted at this and that.

I did another DriverTest via the cluboverclocker page resources and yet no problems were detected with the USB drivers I had installed.

I then went to the Fixya page and found this article :

    http://www.fixya.com/support/t120014-usb2_high_speed_not_recognize

Upon reading this, all hope was dashed on my part that a solution couldn't be found unless I did the same as the guy in the thread, and replace his entire motherboard!!

I thought this was extreme to say the least, so I decided to uninstall my EHCI usb controller once more and do a little more surfing. It was then that I discovered the following page :

    http://www.ratocsystems.com/english/download/driver/pciu2.html

Even though it seems to relate to Service Pack 1, I really thought I had nothing to lose, so I opted for a manual install of the driver. Upon doing this I was presented with an option I hadn't previously seen.

Instead of installing a USB2.0 Enhanced Controller, I also had the option to install a Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller and in doing so I have the following device manager config :

    http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/9/21/231493/success.jpg

All my USB devices reinstalled and none produced the dreaded "this device can perform faster" message from hell.

I put this to the test by dragging a few video files from my flash drive and they whizzed off onto my hard drive in no time at all. Bliss!!

I hope this thread can in future provide some help for those that are having this problem still.

    Thank you Major Geeks :cool

Well it took some finding, but we will all be pleased with your success, :clap and a handy link for others with similar problem. One of microsoft links above said to uninstall rather than update, and I know you tried everything, and coming back with a further solution that worked, will definitely help others. :dancer :wave
