I basically just need to ask whether my motherboard comes with a USB 2.0 host controller or not. The Asus website was unclear on whether my A8N SLI-Premium came with, or was compatible with USB 2.0. Either way, it isn't registering as USB 2.0 under Device Manager. It's causing really slow transfer rates for my IPOD etc. Anyone help me out? It might be as simple as pointing me to the correct drivers.

That board, without a doubt should come out of the box USB 2.0 ready!! Have you looked in the bios to see if there are settings within the USB area of the CMOS??

Also...have you gone to the ASUS website to see if updating your chipset driver might resolve the issue??

Before we find the necessary updates, we need to know...

    1) What is the Chipset

    2) What BIOS version are you currently running

    3) Are you running 32 or 64 bit Windows XP

Then we can go from there.

Open Control Panel (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel)

    Open 'System'

    Click the 'Hardware' Tab

    Select Device Manager

Expand the node 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers'

You are looking for the word 'Enhanced'

I there is a 'device' in there called 'Enhanced USB Host Controller' or something similair then your computer has USB2 support.

    Hope this helps

I'll get you the requested information in a moment (after I figure out how to find my chipset info etc).

In response to Chugg, I don't have any enhanced USB controllers listed.

    I've got:
    Microsoft Integrated USB Hub
    Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
    USB Root Hub

Also flagged under "Other Devices" I have:

USB Controller (no drivers installed, no more info given)
Uknown Device (location PCI Bus, no drivers, no more info given)
    Raid Controller (no drivers)

I've known of these missing drivers for a while but it has never really affected me until now (Can't use my Ipod, long story) so any help in fixing these now that I'm at it would be appreciated.

So I'm having trouble figuring out if my Chipset and Bios drivers are updated or not. In fact, I can't even figure out what Chipset I have because the two options I've heard to find it aren't working.

Pausing the screen during startup doesn't work because the information flashes on and off the screen before I can tap the button. The other option I've heard was to download some software, but I'm leery of adding any more unnecessary, possibly spyware containing programs. Somebody want to clue me in?

The Asus website has new BIOS drivers in beta version, or some final release from November of 2005, but before I download them I'm supposed to upgrade my chipset, so I need to start there. Thanks again.

    Sam

To find the chipset your using ( and much more info about the hardware in your PC ), you can use Everest once installed click, Motherboard > Chipset.

Also you should be able to find the model version of your ASUS motherboard, if you either post it here or look yourself on ASUS's website it will tell you if the mobo has onboard USB2.0, if not you will need a USB2.0 add-on PCI card.

have you also entered the Bios and checked the options to see if you actually have USB2.0 and its disabled?

    Yeah I should have mentioned:

In BIOS I have USB1, USB2, and USBLegacy all enabled.
My motherboard is A8N SLI Premium and specs say it comes with USB 2.0.

Thanks for the quick replies Halo and others. I'm downloading the Nvidia drivers now. Thanks to Everest (I was sceptical till I saw that Majorgeeks recommended it, it seems pretty cool so far) I found my Chipset:

    Device Description
North Bridge: nVIDIA nForce4 SLI (CK8-04)

Which led me to figure out I may have downloaded the wrong Nvidia drivers after a reformat....I'll update later, I'm out for the evening.
