I recently transferred a 15.5GB file from my Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop to a Maxtor USB 2.0 external HD
    The transfer took 32 minutes.

I then transferred the same 15.5 GB file to my Desktop (Dell 8200 using XP) and the transfer took one hour and three minutes.

The Dell desktop has a recently installed usb2.0 PCI card. When I installed the new card everything seemed to go okay as far as the plug and play XP drivers for the card. The XP software is up to date (service pack 3)

I am trying to figure out what is causing the different transfer times for the identical file.

It may be that the new USB 2.0 card is transferring at USB 1.1 transfer rates.

Could someone please advise what the problem might be?
    Thanks for your help!

This may have been part of the slowness. However, if all other things were equal, then the difference in speed would have been 40 times since USB1.1 has a full speed of 12Mbit/sec and USB 2.0 is 480MBit/sec. The Dimension 8200 is an aging platform, and may not fully support USB2.0, and it probably has slower bus speeds, slower CPU, slower hard drive (which may be fragmented), less RAM, etc..... more information than you could possibly want to know about USB can be found at this link to Wikipedia's article on USB.
