I have several programs such as vistumbler which ask what com port you are using for the input(1-4). But my Aldi (Medion) GPS only has a usb out, and my Toshiba laptop A215 only has usb in and no com ports. The laptop uses Vista and my main computer uses XP Pro, but I have not been successful in finding any free software on the internet which will let me use a usb port and make it look like a com port for use with the programs. Another device I have with usb out is a Maxkon weather station, but UIWeather again wants to see a com port. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Joelsz, I will try that. But the thing that worries me on that site is the first sentence which says "VCP drivers currently available for FTDI devices", which makes me wonder if they will only work with 'Future Technology Devices International' devices. But it is certainly worth a try.

    Good luck.
Like I say I've never used their product.

No, this did not work. When I tried to reboot later, it went looking for an FTDI device which ofcourse was not there, and froze. I had to go to a previous restore point to get the computer working again.
So I am still looking for a 'nonspecific' Virtual Com Port to USB program.:cry
