I have been given a Toshiba 6100 laptop running XP Pro SP1 to clean up. Becasue it was full of spyware, viruses, dialers et all I decided to do a complete re-install from the system recovery discs which went fine, until I installed SP2.

Now whenever the laptop comes back out of standby mode it displays the error message 'USB device not recognised'. There is nothing currently plugged into the USB ports. I have downloaded all of the latest drivers from the Toshiba website but the only thing that has resolved this issue is to re-install without SP2. Due to the problems with viruses etc the owner previously had, I really want to add SP2 due to the higher security over SP1 but cannot see any way round it other than disabling standby mode or the USB ports - neither of which are that sensible for this machine.

Anybody come across this before or have any suggestions?

Create a system restore point just in case......

You could go into the device manager & delete the usb drivers, reboot, reload the drivers. Just make sure you have them ready.

edit: Found this at another forum:

"A call centre will tell you to reformat your computer. (Dell told me to reformat mine computer, so did HP-Compaq, Acer gave me a personalised-made solution)

Okay, to your this solution, it is pretty common in windows xpsp2. The solution is as follows:
    1. Press Windows Button & Pause/Break to go to the System Properties (or right click on My Computer and choose Properties, but the other way is more fun.)
    2. Choose Device Manager (Under the hardware tab).
    3. Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section (It auto-expands if there is a problem in it)
    4. Right click and choose Properties of one that says something about PCI bridge (I forget the exact name and after you fix the problem, this item goes away. If you aren't sure, you try step 5 and 6 on all of the USB items in that list.) (Sometimes this thing has a exclamation mark on it)
    5. Click on the Driver Tab. (Right click and click on propertise, and under the driver's tab)
    6. If the driver information on top says "Not found" or "Not installed" then click Update Driver... and let it look for the driver itself (You will need a xp cd if you did not have a copy in your harddisk, named i386)
    7. After it finds the driver, click Okay and USB should start working immediately - no reboots needed!

If you cannot find the PCI Bridge, complete step 5-7 on all the items, under the sub-tree of Universal Serial Bus Controllers Section."

Check Toshiba's web site concerning your computer model and see if they have any patches etc. that are recommended before using SP2. This was a problem when SP2 first came out.;)

It is not that mine doesn't recognise something when it is plugged in - there isn't anything plugged in.

I have deleted all USB hubs and controllers and reloaded drivers for them - still same result.

Been to Toshiba website but cannot see anything about my problem. I may of course be going blind. Google cannot find anything either.

If there are no usb devices & you just want to get rid of the error box popping try going into the device manager & find USB/Properties. Simply disable the device. That should get rid of the error.
