"USB device not recognized" blaa blaa

"the last usb device was not shut down properly" Taht's what it said when Kelly tried to plug his portable hard drive in the computer. He hadn't disconnected his iPod properly before that (he was trying to do something with it without iTunes, which I told him was not possible). My iPod worked on it just fine. His portable works fine on his laptop. This was like a week ago. I printed stuff out last night just fine. but TODAY when i turned the printer on (which is plugged in a completely different place), I got the 'USB not recognized' BS & it wouldn't work. I shut it (the printer)down & started it up again, thankfully it worked after taht. But I don't want this to be an ongoing thing!! Is this something I can fix?

Hi

Its possible that the USB drive letter or recognition is amiss with Windows, this can happen when the portable device is plugged into other devices. So best 1st test is to delete the USB driver reference for this device on your PC and recreate.

To do this, open device manager and then the Universal Serial Bus Controller branch and then note the list, then plug in your device and not the change, it may say Mass Storage Device and right click and uninstall this device, then unplug and replug in your USB Device and the drive should reload the driver again and be accessible

The fix could be to assign a drive letter to the device thats XYZ range, so to do this open Disk Management and with the USB device connected right click and assign a new drive letter and choose in the XYZ range of the alphabet a letter.
