Running Win xp with all sp updates....
I have been using a Memorex 256mb USB thumb drive for several months with no problems. All of a sudden, my PC will not recognize the drive. My laptop and two other PSs have no problem recognizing the usb drive and all files.
The Pc that will not recognize the memorex drive will recognize a wireless mouse usb.
    Any suggestions?????

    Just a thought:

Have you tried connecting it, and running through the Add Hardware wizard?

Problem is if I log on as an administrator it works. But when I log on network as my usual user it will not work. It always worked on the network.

You probably have net mapped drive. right?
Unmap it. see if it works. Flash might be trying to use the same drive letter.
    I had exactly same problem....
if this is the case, go to manage and change the usb flash drive letter to something different then your mapped drive.

    good luck

    Try This

    This maybe a possiblity??!!

    First!
    1. Check for if "USB Mass Storage Tool Box" is installed = Go to = Control Box = Add or Remove Programs = If not there you will have to invesigate how to reinstall same??
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    Second!
    2. Check that the Flash Drive is showing up in My Computer.
    3. If not found try this, download and install and run XPTWEAKUI =
    a) in XPTWEAKUI = My Computer = Drives = and enter a tick in your Drive for the Flash Disk.

You can download XPTWEAKUI from within the URL of =

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx

After installing TweakUI you will find TweakUI under Power Tools for Windows XP in the computer’s programs Menu
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    Third!
Insert your = USB Flash disk = USB 2 port =.
If the Flash Drive is showing = in = My Computer = right click on the USB drive = Tools folder = Error Checking = Automatic Fix File System Errors = button - Start =
Next = in My Computer = Hardware folder = Device Manager = select Flash Disk drive = Properties = Volumes folder = Populate = OK button = should show you a list? =
Next go to = My Computer = open up the Flash Disk= view for the folder’s contents = Yes. You may see some old files present. If it is vacant try to drag a file into the opened Flash Disk folder page = To confirm all is OK?

Now last all do not forget to go to = System Tray = icon - Safely Remove Hardware = Stop = to disable the hardware???

    Shingy,
I need to know your environment first. Can you tell me what type of OS (Windows ...) you're running and what type of network you're in?
If you're in Win XP, or 2000 and "Domain" network, you need to talk to your IT admin. Because you probably do not have the system rights (access rights) in order to fix this problem.
If you're in simple workgroup, or have Local Admin rights (Full access rights to your computer), this is what you need to do.
-Unmap it : 1. Open your drives (by double clicking "My computer" icon)
    2. Check to see if there are "Network Drives". - These are called Mapped drives. Usually, it is indicated with letters OTHER THAN usual "A", "C", "D" or "E". So if you see anything above these letters, it may well be mapped.
    3. Right click on the drive letter. and make sure you see "disconnect" from the menu. (Local drives will not show "disconnect")
    3.5 Click on the "disconnect".
Repeat as needed. and when all is done, connect your USB flash and see if it works. If it works, you'll need to change the drive letter for the device and remap your drives. so LET ME KNOW and I'll give you instructions again.
I'm only giving you the first step because in many cases, these might not be the solution to your problem...

    Good Luck!

Ok well i checked and it does not seem this way, i have Daemon tools running so i don't know if it counts for this but i did not see a disconnect for those drives, and none of the my other drives went beyond E.

I have windows XP as i think you already know by now. This is my PC so yeah i should have full rights.

    Shangy,
ok. So you're not in the network environment? then this is totally different issue.
First, I'd check to see if the flash drive really works (Check with another PC).
Then, check to see if your PC needs driver for the device (which is rare with WinXP, but it happens).
Then, check to see if your MB is compatible with your device. This, quite surprisingly, happens alot. All other devices, like your printer and camera would work fine on the USB port but it wouldn't work with your USB Flash... Why, you ask? I think it's got to do with chipset. (I ASSUME) However, I was never able to find out exactly why. But I can tell you that I was able to fix the problem by changing the MB, or installing PCI USB card.

So there you go. I do not know what else to tell you because your info. is limitted. Check these things out and let me know!

    Good luck.

Ok so what it is, is that it used to work, around june actually is when i last used it, so my MB is compatible, i think the drivers are screwed i think, it does not seem to need them, but even if it did, i would not know what to do or where to get them anyways. and if it worked before im sure that my PC would have them.
The memory stick works on my dads laptop too so thats not the issue, so its most likely my PC.

    Shingy,
you should, most likely, find your driver from the manufacture's website.
You should reinstall it to see if your driver may have been corrupted for some reason.

Here is another thing to check. Do you have "Norton Internet Security" installed on your computer? Or any other 3rd party firewall software? If so, disable them to check if they are causing the problem.

My anti-virus ain't the problem, tried that already. I will see if i can find the driver. Hopefully.

I used it around june last summer, so basically around 6 months.
I can't really remember if that happened or not.

This is a common and vexing problem, one which I had myself until a few minutes ago, but the solution is simple.
Close everything down, remove all peripherals and more importantly, remove the power supply. Leave the computer for about 5 minutes so that all residual electricity disappears. Re-attach all usb devices that you need initially such as keyboard, monitor and mouse. Switch on then add all other USB devices one by one - XP is be forced to restore all its drivers. I have read a few other cases where it worked similarly and it worked for me. Try it!
