I know I saw a post about this, but can't find it now!

How do I put a protected (undeletable/write protected/etc.) autorun file on a USB thumb drive so that viruses/etc. can't install one of their own if I connect it to an infected machine?

Basically, I want to put some malware removal tools on a USB drive to use on different infected machines, but don't want the USB drive to get infected in the process.

All I do with mine, is move the write protect slider to write protect position, when using on other laptops/pc's- .

Unfortunately, I don't have a write protect slider on mine... I KNOW there's a way to put a protected autorun file on them, like I said I read about it in a post a few weeks ago, but forum searching doesn't bring up the post I saw, and I can't remember exactly what it said.

Microsoft gives directions on how to turn autorun off on the computer.
There was just a security advisory in the last day or two.

    Here are the details

From what I see around, many people have problems with undoing write protection, and I saw one called pen -protector, but basically all this does is to form a fill up folder to the usb stick so there is theoretically no space for virus- I don't feel that is a good sytem- but others might.
I have seen a blog mentioning how to make this folder, or folders , without that pen-protector, and I see there is an antivirus software pupoting to run from the usb stick, but, again- not something that I have tried.
Perhaps someone else has some eperience in write protecting with software.

Thank you, this helps as well. While it doesn't address my actual question, it certainly provides an additional solution.

I don't think that disabling autorun will stop viruses that use an autorun exploit from running, but it's definitely another protection measure.

I've always thought autorun was kind of stupid, anyway... especially when multitasking, I don't want something popping up when I'm in the middle of something else!

Looks like it could be the answer, but I have not tested it , yet- anyone tested it ?

I've protected a USB drive with it, but haven't tried to get a virus to see if it blocks it... lol.

    This is true.

However, it doesn't work well with in-line USB ports with other things connected (such as laptops, USB hubs, etc.), since it has a wide form factor.

Thanks for the suggestion, though... it may be something I end up using in the future.
