I am trying to teach my dad how to disconnect a USB memory stick and it is proving quite difficult, something that I believe is over complicated.
His new PC has USB keyboard & mouse, which I can't stand and a waste of a USB port, but which I don't want him to mistakenly eject, which is very difficult when they are not labelled well in the list.
Why don't they list better names in the Safely Remove Hardware list?
Is there a simpler way to do this?
Is there a piece of software?

Although it is a good practice to use the Safely Remove Hardware routine, USB devices are what is called "hot swappable".
This means that you can safely remove a USB device without risking damage to the device or your system.
The problem with USB "thumb drives" also called "pen drives" or "memory sticks", is that although "hot swapping" them won't harm the device, if they are in he process of transferring data to your computer when they are unplugged you can damage or lose that data.
Therefore if you are certain that any data that you are transfering from your memory stick has been transfered, you can simply unplug it from the USB port.

Within XP, open my computer, and then the properties of the drive. Hit the hardware tab, then open the properties for the drive in question, and go to performance. Make sure it's optimized for quick removal.

Then explain that if he pulls it out while the light is blinking, the computer will DIE.
