I seem to be getting a weird error message on my Lenovo laptop when I try to print something. When I plug in the USB printer I get the message "USB device not recognized: the last USB device connected to this drive malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it".

It won't let me print or anything. I just keep getting that error message. I tried restarting the computer etc. but that did not help.

Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this?

The computer is a Lenova ideapad Y700

I suspect if you keep plugging and unplugging the printer, it gets assigned a different drive letter. It is probably confused.

    Download USBDev View

See what devices are or have been plugged in and perhaps you can disable the one referred to in the statement "the last USB device connected to this drive malfunctioned". If so, perhaps the printer will gain its proper drive letter and function.

I tried that and it worked. Hopefully, it is not a issue that I keep having, but for now it is fixed. That you very much for your response.

I have one external hard drive that I plug and unplug on a desktop computer.
    1. I have an extension cable going from a rear USB port to the front of the computer so the portable hard drive ALWAYS gets plugged into the same port.
    2. I opened Disk Management and assigned the letter S to the portable drive. Every time it is plugged in, it is given the letter S so I have no problem with it.

I don't think you can assign a "drive" letter to a printer. If you could, that would solve the problem.

We have 3 netbooks and a tablet in the house in addition to 5 desktop computers. I have a printer attached to the router through a print server. If we want to print, we don't have to plug and unplug the printer, we just print wireless from the netbooks.

If you have a router, you might want to consider attaching the printer to the router and printing wirelessly from your laptop.
