usb error msg

Hi
My son got an Mp4 player for xmas and when he attempts to plug it into the usb he keeps this message 'a usb device has exceeded the power limits of its hub point'
Any ideas how to remedy this!

A few questions:

How old is the computer you are plugging in to approximately?

Are you plugging it directly in to a USB port on the computer, or to a USB hub attached to the computer?

What other things that require USB connection do you have attached to either the hub or computer, if applicable?

The pc is about 2 year old. I think the only other thing plugged in is the keyboard and the usb port is directly in the pc!
As you can gather, im not technical at all!

So basically the mp4 player is trying to draw more power than your computer's hub is able to provide.

To work around this you will need an external hub that you plug in to the USB device of your computer and power it from your mains electricity, not through your computer. (Make sure the hub you buy can be powered off mains electricity, not just via your PC. )Then you can plug the mp4 player in to the external hub.

By external hub I am refering to something like this http://www.usb-ware.com/usb-hubs.htm Make sure the one you get is USB 1.1 and 2.0 compatible, as you may have things that require 1.1 which I am unaware of. These are not expensive and you can get them in Circuit City or Best Buy. One with 4 ports (USB holes) should be sufficient for you. Don't be convinced to spend more on a bigger one - you are unlikely to need it.
