USB hardware not recognised

    System:
Fujitsu-Siemens Scaleo M, Intel Celeron 2600MHz, Motherboard MSI 648 Max (MS-6585), 1024MB RAM, Display NVIDIA Geforce FX5200 64MB, Storage Maxtor Ultra-ATA 80GB, OS Windows XP Home SP3. (See USB details below).

    Problem:
    (A) Originated when connecting my TomTom ONE XL SatNav (thanks Santa!!), which is USB device. I had already connected this to my other PC (laptop) without a hitch. Connecting it to the Scaleo, it brought up a 'found new hardware' message and then, unexpectedly, the ‘found new hardware' wizard. The automatic installation failed. It recognises the device as ‘ONE XL’ but gives the following error: “An error occurred during the installation of the device. The data is invalid.”
[There is no driver supplied with TomTom since it uses inbuilt mass storage drivers in the OS. The TomTom continues to work fine with other PC.]
    (B) A few days later my camera (Sony DSLR A300) which was working on USB connection with this PC (Scaleo) has stopped working - it goes through the same 'install hardware' routine.

    I have done the following:
    (1) Windows/Microsoft Update – I always keep this up to date manually (‘custom’) as well as automatically (‘express’).
    (2) Reinstalled the "TomTom Home" software which is bundled (i.e. remove-reboot-install). Same problem.
    (3) Connected the TomTom unit after uninstalling the "Home" bundled software - in theory this should also work as the software does not have hardware drivers as such. Same problem.
    (4) Connected the TomTom unit after disabling Spybot S&D’s ‘Tea Timer’ which I suspect can sometimes silently block installations.
[I had not had any messages from the Tea Timer when I originally connected the device but perhaps it is this that has caused problems. When I tried it on my other PC (the laptop) I disabled Tea Timer from the outset and did not have any problems. But it may be a red herring.]
Anyway, I still get the same problem now, even without Spybot’s real-time protection.
    (5) Tried (but failed) to reinstall USB drivers. Microsoft website suggests reinstalling USB by going to Device Manager and uninstalling each of the USB entries and rebooting. When I try this (several times) it always near-freezes the PC and gives 99% processor load against ‘services.exe’ in the Task Manager.
[I have tried this uninstallation with the USB devices enabled and disabled; I have tried in different orders. Disabling the USB in BIOS simply removes them from the Windows device list, it doesn’t seem to reinstall drivers. But I do wonder whether this is what stopped the camera from working because it worked before I messed around with the USB devices.]
    (6) Tried (but uncertain outcome) to update the USB drivers automatically. In Device Manager I right-clicked on all USB entries and selected ‘update driver’ and let this find updated drivers. See note below on USB drivers.
    (7) Looked for updated drivers from manufacturers:
    > Fujitsu-Siemens offered downloads for flash-BIOS (same version 1.2 as installed); network; graphics; AGP – but nothing for USB.
    > SiS did a scan of the computer and offered downloads for audio, IDE, AGP, and Ethernet. It reported that the USB is “provided by OS”. I can’t find the 7001/7002 drivers on the SiS website, although other websites do offer them, but I’m not sure which to trust.

USB driver details (from ‘Everest Home Edition’ report):
USB is controlled by SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controllers (x3), and SiS 7002 PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller (x1). The drivers are as follows:
    > IRQ 20 – ver. 5.1.2600.5512 dated 01/07/2001
    > IRQ 21 & 22 – ver. 5.1.2600.1106 dated 01/07/2001
    > IRQ 23 (enhanced) – ver. 5.1.2600.0 dated 01/06/2002

Any help you can offer would be gratefully received.
    Thanks, Dan

    Resolved: USB driver problem

OK, here's how I resolved it:
    (a) Uninstalled driver for "General purpose USB driver (adildr.sys)" that had a Code 24 in device manager - but was hidden so I hadn't seen it at first. Rebooted just to be sure.
    (b) I also downloaded and ran "pnpreg" from Microsoft knowledgebase 810509 but I don't think that was the decisive step.

Anyway perhaps this may help someone else in future...

    Dan
