    hi all,

i have an external hdd enclosure with a 200gig sata 2 hdd, partitioned into 3, not signed - the problem is that when i switch it on it automatically opens the 3 partitions in sepparate windows, is there any way i can stop this ?

i have looked in gpedit.msc for a way but couldn't find one (maybe looking wrong), cd/dvd auto run is switched off and the registry key is 0

    w2k pro sp4

    thanks

Check the 1st partition for an autorun.inf file and/or an autorun.exe file. You may need to enable viewing of hidden files and disable the hiding of system files. If they're not on the 1st partition, check the other partitions. If you do see one (or both) of these files, try renaming 'em to something like "autorun-renamed.inf".... you get the idea. If that gets rid of the auto-open, then you can either delete the file(s) or leave 'em renamed in case you want to make the HD auto-open again in the future. If the files aren't there, please post and I'll try to find a fix for you...

    hi hd2k,

looked for them first (just in case) when i formated the thing and this oddity happened - not there then and still not there (can you tell its getting on my nerves), searched through gpedit again but :banghead

    hi,

already done (part of my security measures) - thats the bit thats confusing me a little, none of my other usb drives do it (usb drives maybe a bit misleading here - i have 2 pen drives and my mobile phone (2 drives) and also card readers - all show up as usb drives)
i tried mailing the maker of the enclosure but just got a failure message each time i tried

didn't work, checked the settings in the user interface, under options it says 'usbautostart is disabled', re-booted and plugged in the drive, it opened,
guess i'll have to live with it,

    thanks

Hmmmmm.... maybe one of the many Windows 'tweaking' programs will help: MZ Tweak, RegToy, Tweak Genie, etc.... most of 'em have options for Enable/Disable autoplay and similar settings....
