robertbiferi I can't follow the rules

I have Win 7. and a SATA 2. Hard Drive that I toock out of my computer to put a Biger one in.

Then I remembered I had some work on the Hard Drive I did not get off it.

So I got a USB to SATA Hard Driver connector.

So I do all the connections and then Plug it into my computers USB port and my Win 7. sees it and I click Open Folder.

Now my Old Hard Drive had Win XP on it and my work was on the Desktop so I go through the DiR on the Hard Drive to get to the Desktop.

Documents And Settings/ the User Name.
    Then I get to Desktop.

I click on Desktop and a window comes up telling me I need ADMIN permisson to access this Folder.

And to Click Continu to go On so I click Continu.

Then a Window comes up telling me I don't have ADMIN permission.

The account I have has ADMIN rights I just checked.

    What is going on???

Unfortunately it is part of Windows User Account protect. If you have multiple user accounts on a PC you can only access the contents of your own profile unless you have admin rights. for exsample you may have an account, your partner may have an account and your child may have an account. You dont want your child changing your partner or your files so windows locks it down.

I have had this same problem but I always use the same user ID and that seems to be sufficient to fool Windows. You may be able to get round it by plugging the old drive back in as master and booting from that (you may be able to boot from it as USB by changing the boot order settings in the BIOS). Once you boot into Windows on the old drive go to your desktop (or what ever folder you want to access) in windows explorer and open the properties window for desktop. Go to the permissions tab and add a new set of permissions that allow the user "Everyone" to read and write to this folder.

Shut down and boot back to your new HD and you should be able to access it.

The account on the hard drive was setup as ADMIN.

The account I use on my Win 7. is setup with ADMIN as well.

If I have ADMIN account setup on my win 7. I thought this will let me do anything?

A user account with administrator priviledges is different from an administrator account.

The permissions on the folder will be set based on the accounds created on the windows installation that the folder was created under. As the account that you are trying to access the folder with is neither the creator or administrator on that install it wont work.

Follow my steps below and you should be able to get access

OK I found some info on the net that tells me to do this.

After I plug in the USB Drive Right click on it in My Computer.

Then go to Properties then Secueity Tab.

Then Advanced then Owner then Edit.

    Then change Owner to ME.

I am not sure what it meens change Owner to ME and I don't wont to mass things up.

And just one thing if I have ADMIN Rights on my Win 7. account then anything I plug into my computer I sould be able to do with as I want right as long as I am Loged on to my ADMIN accouhnt?

The steps you have described in your previous post do the same as what I have described. I am not sure whether you will be able to do this from your existing account on your new PC. Give it a go and if it wont let you then you may have to boot into your old OS.

Well I found even more infor on how to take Ownership of Acounts and I hope it works I will let you know.

But the last step in all the information I find about taking Ownership of the USB Hard Drive say to select the account you want to get into.

Well on the old Hard Drive I had my account as ADMIN and I still remember the Password.

Do I look for an ADMIN account to take Ownership of or do they want me to look for a Name of the old account?

OK I think I can do it but one thing.

I click Properties on the USB Drive I want to take Ownership of and a screen opens.

It says Select the account you want to take Ownership of.

The top of the page say F: object

This is the Drive I want to take Ownership of I get this.

And it gives me a list of account names.
    One says robertbiferi/administrator
    One says system
    One says owner

I never had an account on this Drive called robertbiferi this is the account on my computer I have now.

I think I am very close I just don't want to mass things up and I want to be sure I am doing things right.

Is there some were I can get photos of what I should click on and what it will look like?

I tryed to Log In to the Aministrator account of the computer in safe mode.

When to All Programs found the Command Prompt Right clicked on it and picked Run As Administrator.

Then at the command prompt I typed
    net user administrator /active:yes

Then I Booted into safe mode.

I then connected the Hard Drive to the usb port and whent into it.

As so as I try to get any files off it I get
    You Do Not Have Permisson.

This did not work so I am going to try to take Ownership of the Drive but one thing?

When I am at the screen that wants me to Type Group Name.

This is the Name of the Group that will have Ownership of the Device.

So it will be me so I type my Account Name right??

Under "Groups or Users" click add then click "advanced" hit "Find Now" and it will list all users on the PC.

Find your account and then add it. Go back to the Permissions window and you will see that your name appears in the list. Click on it and in the section underneath it will display the permissions for your account. Hit the check box next to full control. and apply it.

Thank you it all is working now.

But in the list were I pick the Account that I want to have Ownership of the Drive I did not see all the users.

I do have a Account I made for my Family to use and it is a Limited Account.

It was not in this list is this ok?

Glad you got it sorted. I wouldnt worry about it too much. Dont try to fix problems that aren't causing a problem.
