I have a laptop and use a wireless modem at home which uses a landline phone.
Went to the library at school today with my computer and again my computer wouldnt connect at the table I was using.. 98% of the time, I can get a signal fine or I can use a school computer...

but I dont use my home phone, so I pay $40/month for phone and internet
Can I get a USB internet stick, to have internet access, cheaper than that?

The last time I checked it was about £30 per month which works out around $60,with usage caps. The price depends on the size of the usage cap and your limited to about 1-2mbps download.

In answer to your question no,I doubt you'll get it for that price and if you do it won't be anywhere near as good due to speed and usage limits.

I doubt it. Most that I have seen are running over $50 a month. The real problem would be why you can't connect to an open network.

yes, I know, I was able to connect easily a few days ago, I was going to a restore, but I had several "critical" updates and I thought I was just in a bad place, even though 100% signal
I can connect at home just fine...the librarians, who arent tech savy at all, told me to email tech support.....I have no idea what to do....what would you do?

Avoid 3G/4G USB sticks unless you absolutely have to have "on the go" Internet. Most have data use caps of 5GB per month. Even basic web surfing, e-mail and Windows Updates will easily eat 3-4GB per month. Add any YouTube, NetFlix, gaming, etc. and you'll have overage charges out the a:***.

If you want both high speed Internet and a home telephone, consider the following plan:

    * Ask your phone company if they have a DSL-only option (I believe that, by FCC rules, they have to offer one). Also check your local cable company. In Houston, both AT&T (DSL) and Comcast (Cable) are offering introductory packages at $19.99/month for the first year. At the end of the first year, call and tell them you're considering switching to the other; they'll likely extend the discounted rate to keep you as a customer.

    * Now that you have high-speed Internet, switch your phone to a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) service that uses your new high-speed ISP. Some common services (and their pros/cons) include:

    * Vonage. Plans start at about $15/month; excellent voice and sound quality. Supports E-911 locater service (it gives 911 your address even if you're unable to talk). Allows you to transfer your existing phone # to the Vonage account. Vonage hardware is about $40 upfront; usually free after mail-in rebate and two months of paid service.

*OOMA. Similar features and sound quality as Vonage. Lifetime free phone service including E-911. The catch is you pay $150-$200 up front for the converter box.

*Skype. Low cost but variable (iffy) sound/voice quality. No E-911. Requires PC to be turned on to make/receive calls.

*MagicJack: $40 for USB stick (includes first year of service; $20/year thereafter). Marginal to poor sound/voice quality. Requires PC to be turned on to make/receive calls. Easier to hook up to your existing telephone than Skype. No E-911.

At worst (by combining a $19.99 high speed plan with a $14.99 Vonage account), you'll be able to use the phone and Internet at the same time plus see at least a 10-12x faster Internet speed (768KBs vs dial-up 56KBs).

    Hope these options help. :)

What happened when you tried to connect? Did you see the open connection? When you tried to connect, did you get any error messages? Maybe you need to post in the networking forum so we can try to figure out why you couldn't connect.
