Usb Lost All Data And Formatting. Why?

    I am curious as to what happened to my USB disc. It is a Wintec filemate 32GB. It was on an HP HDX windows 7 laptop. Everything had been working fine for a month and yesterday I plugged it in to see my data and it said. "Need to format. Volume does not contain a recognize file system." Can I retrieve any of my data from the USB and if so how? Thank you.
