USB malfunctioning?

Hello,

I've been having some trouble with my older PC. When I connect a new device (such as a mouse, keyboard, joystick, etc) to any of my USB ports, Windows will detect them, and install them like normal. The problem is, after a few minutes the device seems to lose power, and will cease to function. The only way to 'turn it back on' is to unplug the device and plug it back in. I noticed that this only happens with a device that needs to be powered through the USB (my printer seems to function correctly). I also noticed the mouse and keyboard that I attach through the PS/2 slot work correctly. I was thinking the problem could be a faulty power supply or the power supply just doesn't supply enough power. I was wondering if you guys (and possibly gals?) could give me your 'two cents'?

Computer Specs:
Windows Home Edition OS
AMD Sempron 2400+ 1.7 GHz Processor
1 GB (two sticks of 512 MB) DDR 1 RAM
30 GB IDE Hard Drive
ATI Radeon 9550 SE (256 MB) video card
Power Supply is 230W I believe.

 

Lack of power may well be your problem(could be drivers for usb also)
My suggestion is to try a new PS at least 400 watts( as that 230 is most likely the OEM PS)

I've replaced the power supply with a 465W power supply and it doesn't seem to have solved the problem. Could I get any more input?

 

yeah RE: the power issue, I had a similar problem, see here for the thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=917825#post917825 to save me typing it all in again. Otherwise, I agree with Petaluma esp. if its a USB card, download and reinstall the drivers.

 

I've replaced the power supply, and now I've checked for driver updates and came up with basically nothing (SiS 7001). Could someone direct me to a better place to find the drivers I need?

 

well i use driverguide and they have a sis 7001 driver. But I suggest you read the SP stufff. http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=171275
