USB Mouse Problems

Okay my friend has a Microsoft Optical USB mouse, I'm not sure which version but anyway... It works for a bit and then freezes and then works some more, I now it's the mouse since the keybored works. I was gonna eather roolback the drivers, update them, or reinstall then, but I've never used a USB mouse before, so is this the right way to go about it? WIndows XP pops up with a message saying there's a problem with the mouse but I can't click it since it only happens when the mouse freezes.... Anyone?

mother type? Bios version on the mobo?
VIA chipset? VIA driver version? USB filter installed if VIA chipset?

has he tried another usb port? has he tried another usb mouse?

 

it just started recently it was fine for months, dammit I remember tryign another USB port, as well as useing an adapter in the PS/2 port or whatever. i forget what happened, I'm pretty sure it didn't work, and i'm not 100% sure i tried another USB port. I think we tried another mouse to.... Dammit I'm dumb. Ok so what should I do depending on what happens, I really just dont want to accedently screw up the comp make a little problem a lot worse.

 

jiggle the cord near the mouse, I've seen rev 1 MS mice that have problems with the cable there, if windows detects it while moving the cable then call up MS and send it back. They will replace it free of charge.

 

Okay, I'm not going over there again till tomorrow, anything else it could be? Remember it worked for a few months. Anything I should be careful of doing? I've never used a USB mouse before, not sure if there different then PS/2 mouse's.

 

Ok, i tried plugging in another mouse (PS/2 i think thou) and it didnt work, but the weird thing is, he says that after he stopped playing age of mythologie for awhile, the mouse fixes, but if he playes it it gets messed up again, anyone?
