I booted up my machine the other day and a periodic problem occured. My mouse icon was in the middle of the screen and would not move (or right/left click).

The usual solution has been to reboot but this time it did not work despite several reboots.

I have also checked the connections to make sure they are tight, unplugged and plugged in the mouse in order to get to the 'new hardward' screen as well as swapped the usb mouse from one usb port to the other. No success.

I would assume reinstalling the drivers for this would be a good possible solution, however, I am unsure as to how to do that. In Device Manager there is a whole host of stuff under USB drivers that I do not recognize.

Does anyone know a good solution to this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Try another mouse?
    Use a PS2 mouse?
Use a different USB port and reboot after.

    Hi

What Windows version and Service Pack do you have installed?

What make and model mouse do you have as some like Logitech and Microsoft mice come with extra drivers over the default basic ones Windows installs?

Check and clean the infared light if possible or the mouse ball and tiny runners once the ball is taken out.

Check Add/remove for anything like IntelliPoint (Microsofts driver) or Setpoint (logitechs drivers) and uninstall them and then reboot your PC, see if the Windows defualt driver works.

If not a mouse that has an extra driver, open up Device Manager and click Mice and Other Pointing Devices branch and right click and uninstall whats listed, then reboot and Windows should re-install the driver.

If you need to find the exact USB port that you have the mouse plugged into then, open the Universal Serial Bus Controllers branch and then sadly you will have to right click each of the USB hubs and choose properties > the power tab and look for HID compliant Consumer Device or similar, once found then thats your USB mouse or keyboard, can uninstall that USB hub (again right click it and choose Uninstall) reboot to re-install the driver.

*just in case we need more drivers like chipset, what is the Make and Model of your PC (say if its from DELL, HP, Sony etc) and if its a custom build what is the Make and Model of motherboard (ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI etc)?

Those little wires in a mouse cord are very tiny and can be broken easily.

If the mouse ever worked then windows and drivers are not the problem, it's hardware, not software.
    Get another mouse.
