    ANYWAYS... the problem:

About a month or so ago, a MP3 player (USB connection) just simply stopped working.... I mean, it itself works... but for some reason the computer will not recognize it. Under my computer/properties/device manager... it says the following:

    Under USB controllers I show:

    Unknown Device
    USB ROot Hub
    USH ROot Hub
VIA TECH 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
VIA TECH 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller

Anyways, in properties of UNKNOWN DEVICE (aka the mp3 player that USED to be recognized and was working properly at one time) it says the following:
This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not ahve all the drivers installed. (Code 10.) Try upgrading the device drivers for this device.

So you say, Update Driver... Automatic search.... The best driver Windows found is already installed for this device.
    Location of driver:
    c:\Windows\INF\USB.INF

BUT get this... when you click on the "driver" tab of the unknown device properties it says: No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device.

Now... perhaps it's just the MP3 player itself???? Or what do you all think? Our Sony digital camera connects fine.... (well after rebooting the computer with the camera attached to the usb port and turned on).... for some reason the "auto recognition" that used to happen has also stopped - around the same time that the MP3 stopped being recognized actually.

I got some advice that said I should make sure my BIOS and Chipset are okay... now I tried looking into that.. but I don't know if I was looking in the right place or not... the compaq site itself (as the manufacturer) really does not have much to offer by means of drivers etc...

Computer may not been the fastest or the best... but it works for me and I just want to get it working again!

Thanks in advance for any assistance or ideas you all can give me in regards to this issue.

Karlea have you tried uninstalling the USB drivers/Reboot/Then reinstall drivers and see what happens. It may just be a corrupted cluster in the driver program. Hope that helps

Okay... how do i do that then?

Under add/remove programs I have a listing for SONY USB Driver. Do this?

And then, to reinstall... where will I get the executable file?

Sorry... it's probably rather simple... but I just don't know where to start.

Oh... and I'm pretty sure I'm still running USB 1.1.... Everest shows USB as version 1.00.08.24.0 08/24/2000

I tried finding "replacements" on the web to no avail.... everything out there seems to be geared towards usb 2.0.

    Thanks again,
    Karlea

The problem sounds like the driver just got corrupted. Try uninstalling the drivers that have to do with your mp3 player, then restart your computer and reinstall them.

okay... so i don't know how this happened... i've been re-installing, plugging it in to different ports etc, all afternoon....

    anyawys.... NOW:

I get the "pop up" at teh bottom task manager that says....UNPLUG OR EJECT HARDWARE

and under device manager... instead of the nasty yellow exclamation mark... it is now a Green question mark..... it says: the device is working properly....

AND i would agree that the device is working properly... EXCEPT that I cannot access it anyway... I do not show a "removable lettered drive" in my computer.... even though the computer recognizes it as a drive.

    What is up with that????

    Help!

the drivers are usually installed when you install the software for this mp3 player. just uninstall the sony program, restart your pc after the uninstall, and than install the program again.

 Hi. Ah, good ol' USB. You just gotta love it. Firstly, I would suggest upgrading to XP with Service Pack 2 asap. This is for a few of reasons, the least of which being my level of appreciation for Microsoft's buggy products. In the mean time, uninstall the "unknown device" under the Device Mangler. I mean, Device Manager <g>. Run a good registry cleaner. There are some really good freeware ones out there. CrapCleaner, which I think you can download from here or FileHippo, does a mighty fine job. The reason for cleaning the registry is that, if the registry even remotely hints that the dreaded "unknown device" is still there, you don't have a snowball's chance of making any further progress in correctly reinstalling it. I know this from hard experience. Lastly, making sure your MP3 player is NOT connected, reboot and reinstall your device's drivers. After the drivers are in, reconnect and test your player.
