Anyone ever heard of a USB port frying USB cables? I am using a Belkin USB 2 card on a laptop. Plugged in my iPod this morning and after a long delay it started showing that it was charging, but the PC cannot see the iPod. Took the iPod and cable to Apple store, checked both and found the cable is bad.

Bought new cable, brought home and am having the same problem.

Tried iPod on another PC with both cables. Still no joy.

Unfortunately it did not occur to me to try the new cable in a different port until after I plugged it in to the card.

Could my USB port be frying my cable, or is this just an unlucky coincidence (old cable broke, new cable bad)?

It could be either. The best bet is to take everything to the apple store and let them check it.

Or atleast have them hook up the new cable and Ipod to their system and make sure it works. This way when you get it home you can find out what the problem was.
