USB Port Locks Him Up

Good Morning,

I am writing you about a problem that my father is experiencing with his computer. He has a GPS that plugs into the USB port on the computer and is supposed to get the updated streets and such from the internet site. However, when he plugs it in the screen goes blank and the computer locks up. Any ideas on what might cause something like this?

The computer is a Hewlett Packard and is running Windows 98.

This used to work on this computer and it was all wiped out during a clean. Then a scanner was installed on the USB port. He told me that he has removed the scanner drivers but I don't know if he has completely.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

What version is the USB port on your computer, 1.1 or 2.0?

 

Good question,I'm gonna assume 1.1,Can you use the device sporadically-have there been instances where the device has shown up in device manager?
