My computer recently starting alerting me "USB Device Not Recognized". This is without anything being plugged into any of the USB ports. I've gone through the troubleshooting, following their instructions and nothing works. I've downloaded Virus and Spyware removal programs to see if that could fix the problem and I'm having no luck. Does anyone have a suggestion to fix this problem?? I need to get my printer going and the computer won't detect it being plugged in. I've had the printer connected before, it worked fine. This is getting really aggrevating!!!!

    Welcome to MG. :)

The first thing to try is go to the Device Manager (Right click on My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager) Go the the USB contrrollers at the bottom and click on the + sign to show all the USB devices.

Then (be brave ;) ) delete each of them. When you have done that. Reboot the PC. It will then redetect the USB devices and reload them and, all being well your problem should have gone.

I went through and did all that, I'm at a loss here. This doesn't make any sense! Is this computer just royally screwed and unfixable?!?! lol It's outdated, the windows is from '85-2000. I did update the windows thinking that would help and it didn't. I'm not a computer wiz but I can read and follow directions well!!!!

I went through and did a full recovery of the system (again)...I reinstalled the printers software, plugged in the USB when prompted to do so. At first the computer detected the connection and said it was ready for use...just a second after that prompted the alert came up that says "USB Device Not Recognized". I'm so lost here!!!!

Shut down the computer then pull the plug from the wall. Keep it unattached to electric for at least a minute. Then plug it back in, turn it on and see if the message goes away.

I shut my computer down and unplugged everything twice...still nothing. I did chat with a live HP rep. last night, he talked me through a process by using the run program and typing in services.msc. His directions were unsuccessful as well.

What make and model of PC are you running? This will help alot!!

Are you plugging the printer into a PCI card with USB inputs, or are the USB ports integrated into the motherboard?

I'm having almost the exact same problem with my Acer Aspire. A regular mouse plugged into any of the three USB ports comes up as Device Not Recognized. The printer plugged into the same ports freezes the computer completely. Device Manager says nothing is wrong with the ports but when I try to look at it something is plugged in, the DM keeps reloading over and over so I can't look at anything. I've uninstalled and reinstalled all of the ports and drivers, updated the Windows XP software, and the only things left to do that I can think of is to either reinstall Windows or replace the motherboard.
Any other ideas? I can't afford a new computer and I'm so fed up with this one. :cry

    I thought I specified but I must've forgotten... it's a laptop.

Jenn, please start your own thread if you are seeking aid. We are currently handling Stephlynn's problem in this one!
It can get a little too hairy handling two issues on two different machines in the same thread, though you do have similar issues. It's more likely you could receive the wrong advice for your situation.

Yes, my advice was to stephlynn whose thread this is. She wants to get her printer working.

Check the usb cable to your printer hasn't been chewed by your pet or suffered some other damage.

Preferably try with a different cable.
