I have a Dell laptop with one USB slot. I usually use it for my printer. If I should plug in my CD Burner, for example, I get a message in the right lower corner of the screen that says, "The USB device can perform faster if you connect to Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port. For a list of available ports, click here."

When I click I get a window that tells me that there are no Hi-Speed host controllers on this computer.

2 questions: (1) Is this a hardware issue or a software issue. In other words do I need to install a Hi-Speed port or is this something I can download and install.
(2): Why do I not get this message if I plug in the USB plug before starting my computer?

Thanks for the pearls of wisdom & wealth of knowledge I know I am going to receive!!!

Your usb port is only a 1.1 speed, and it appears that the external cd/rw drive can be compatible with the newer usb ports, the 2.0 speed. It's just doing that to tell you it can run at 2.0 speeds, but only on newer machines :)

As MC said its not a problem,if it annoys you however you may be able to remove it,download power toys for windows xp tweak UI from microsoft,"it may be on here but I cant find it" ,open the program, next to taskbar and start menu click and clear the tick, this will disable balloon tips and hopefully the bubble

What would be involved in getting and installing a 2.0 USB port?

I would look on www.newegg.com or www.canadacomputers.com for an expansion card with USB 2 ports. Typically, it would come with instructions for installation.
USB 2 runs at 480Mbps data speed whereas USB 1.1 allowed a maximum transfer rate of 12Mbps. Perhaps quite worthwhile, depending on the usage.

I would recommend the buy,it would increease the speed at which you can transfer data to your cd burner,it also overcomes alot of problems associated with the higher power consumptions that modern usb periphials have, which in my experience have caused older comps with usb 1.1 to bsod.

The upgrade is a simple pci card that costs around $10,a local computer store WILL have one,the delivery cost buying one online I think will make it a little too expensive

Yes, you are most likely right. Heh, I neglect to mention that I uses these sites primarily for research purposes... although I do have local access to Canada Computers...great store.
