I have had a Power Supply failure and it caused problems with computer.

I restored a prior image to the Operating system.

Decided to back up a lot of files to USB 2 Portable Drive. Worked well first day.

Next day XP did not start well so restarted with Safe Mode.

I think I may have unset the USB Drivers.

On connecting the USB Portable Dive the PX System would not connect to the drive.

Microsoft displayed a message " Unable to write $Msft.. (could not get all the name).

Since then I cannot access the USB Portable drive as windows says "The file or directory is corrupted and runreachable."

Can anyone recommend software to use to recover the USB Portable Drive?

    :cry

I take it this is an external hard drive? And does the USB port recognize other devices, like a flash drive?

I would disconnect and unplug the device, reboot everything. If this doesn't work, can you check the device with another computer?

Need to narrow down if it is the device or your machine.:wave:wave:wave

What did you use to restore the image?
    What is a PX System?

I used Terabyte IFW on a BartPE CD to restore the partition.

    Sorry should be XP System....

Yes it is a Card added to my old computer which allows about 4 USB 2.0 Ports to be used with the computer. So it can accept USB Sticks of any kind.

I tried that but the USB would not function at all and just locked up the computer.

[NOTE - Today I checked the cards and cables in the computer to see if anything may be wrong. I had just taken out the Power Supply and placed a new one in several days ago so maybe something was not correct. I found two wires had pushed themselves tightly into the back of the USB Card and after releasing them and starting the computer I now have USB 2.0 connectivity again.]

I have tried to use the WD Portable Drive with other computers and it will not work. Windows accepts that there is a drive but when trying to access the drive it says the drive may need formatting. Which means data corrupted and unable to read the drive.

Well it is something that Microsoft system tried to write to the USB Portable Drive that has screwed it up.

Using TestDisk program I have found the Boot Record Status is OK and the Backup Boot Sector is OK.
TestDrive says both the MFT and MFT Backup are BAD.

Yet I tested another portable USB drive with TestDisk and it says the same about the MFT and MFT Backup being BAD. Yet the drive works fine.
