    I have a Sony VAIO PCV-RS610 desktop.
Using American Mega Trends BIOS V 2.51
The MOBO is an Intel P4SD - VL
The Processor is an Intel 2.8 GHZ

The computer came with an OEM XP OS. I reinstalled a clean install with an after market XP CD. After I clean installed the USB ports do not function. I have 8 total ports in 4 pairs. 4 on the MOBO, and 4 on the front IC connected via cables. None of them work. I have tried 2 mice I know function, and my functioning digital camera.

I unistalled the devices under device manager: Listed as follows

USB Root Hub - listed 4 times
    and
Intel(R) 82801EB USB UNiversal Host Controller listed 5 times as:

    Intel(R) 82801EB USB UNiversal Host Controller 24D2
    Intel(R) 82801EB USB UNiversal Host Controller 24D4
    Intel(R) 82801EB USB UNiversal Host Controller 24D7
    Intel(R) 82801EB USB UNiversal Host Controller 24DE
    Intel(R) 82801EB USB UNiversal Host Controller 24DD

I uninstalled them and then let XP reinstall with no luck. I also unistalled and reinsatlled in Safe Mode with no luck. For both attempts I disconnected all USB devices before uninstalling and reinstalling the devices.

I repaired the XP installation, and that did nothing. I also downloaded the original chipset drivers from Sony's website, along with a BIOS update for a specific fix. I am not sure if the BIOS file was a complete update or just a minor fix.

I checked the BIOS and it says the USB 2.0 is enabled. Although it says it detects nothing.

This computer suffered no ESD. Everything else works fine, and device manager displays that all is working well.

On a side note. Under the device manager the processor listing shows two identical processors: Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 2.80 HGZ
I have unistalled both in turn, but both keep re-appearing after a restart.

    Not sure why.

Please let me know if anyone has any Ideas. Thank you.

That is because the Sony OEM disc contains drivers that your motherboard needs to recognize them, along with other drivers. That is why you should never substitute OEM XP with another version.

    Everything for your machine: http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=PCVRS610&UpdateType=Everything
    Original Drivers: http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=PCVRS610&UpdateType=Original

I did nothing more then you could of by going to Sony.com, and clicking on 'Service & Support' at the Sony.com homepage, and putting in your model# that you supplied.

I can't really understand why you would not use the OEM XP, and install a retail one instead ???? Now you have a "wasted" copy of XP, that can't be used on any other machine.
If it's cuz of preloaded software junk you don't want, you can always uninstall that crap.

Or......If you had the infamous D & C partition (with D being the user partition) that some Sony's have, and you didn't like that.........you can eliminate that, and merge it all into C, using Partition Magic.

Sony's can be kinda "DELLish" when it comes to drivers.

    Brownizs:
I have already been to both these websites and downloaded the original drivers, as I stated in the sentence "I also downloaded the original chipset drivers from Sony's website,..." in my original post.
    None of these worked.

Brian: Although your reply is almost the least helpful comment I have ever seen, I must say I had no OEM copy of the OS, and I did have a retail one. I am fully aware of how to repartition a drive, and remove unwanted programs.

My sistuation called for a re-install of XP. I had one type and not another.

You know, if you still have the original COA for the machine, Sony for a cost will send you the correct XP discs to you.
