USB Ports,Help Plzzzzzzzz

How can I tell if I have a USB port 1.0 or 2.0 port,I want to get an IPOD and the specs. tell me you need a 2.0 port. Could someone explain the difference,which one do I have and do I really need 2.0 port if I only have 1.0,,,, for an IPOD.

And if I need 2.0 ,how do I get it,is its software or hardware,,,wooohooooo my head is spinning now.

USB 2.0 is the newest version of the USB specification.

There are two important facts about USB 2.0.

First, USB 2.0 is 40 times faster than USB 1.0. This is important for devices that require higher speed, such as USB Hard Drives, CDROMs, CDR/W and Flash Card Readers. It is not important for low speed devices, such as keyboard, mouse, or even a USB to Serial Converter.

Second, it is backward compatible with USB 1.1, so USB 1.1 devices can plug into a USB 2.0 connection. USB 2.0 devices can also plug in to a USB 1.1 connection, but they will operate at slower speeds.

Many new computers now come with USB 2.0 connections. You can connect USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 devices to these ports.

And to add to that, USB 2.0 is hardware ... must be supported by the hardware your connecting to it.

If you don't have USB 2.0 on your motherboard, you can get expansion cards which have 4 or 5 USB 2.0 ports on them.

If you're using an iPod, its definatley worth getting USB 2.0 since the process can take AGES on a slower 1.1 connection. Either that or firewire, which is faster still.
