    so here's my problem.
i've been having this problem since.. this july.. after i bought a printer (brother 150c) so.. i installed it like the manual told me how to and everything seems to be working fine except when i rebooted it. SOMETIMES booting is 100% success, but sometimes also, booting hangs to the point between after the loading of windows xp and before the logon screen. it's all a blank.. then (somehow) i realized that removing the usb devices makes boot 100% success always..

so on to the real topic.
yesterday i bought a wireless mouse and a USB as its receiver (by infrared) and i inserted it to my usb port. then my computer suddenly shuts down after i inserted it (with no notice at ALL) it's not complete shutdown though. it just blanks out..half-dead. (BTW i have a usb fan whenever i try to insert it, it goes the same thing as well). so i restarted my pc, only to find out that my usb ports aren't working anymore.. tried to reinstall usb ports..but still to no avail.. i read at some website that if the usb ports in the device manager says that the device is working properly, but it doesn't work at all, then the fault here is in the motherboard. i need to replace the motherboard and not the USB ports because it's risky if i myself were to replace them. so what should i do about my usb ports? :] thanks.

    BTW. my system specs.

    microsoft windows xp professional
    version 2002
    sp2

    intel pentium 4 cpu 2.40GHz
    2.39GHz, 512 of RAM

It sounds like with the fan, printer and mouse receiver you used up more power than the USB ports could handle. Maybe you shorted them out. Don't try to connect three things. If you shut down, plug in just the mouse and nothing else then start up the computer, do you have a working mouse?

You can buy cards that have USB ports on them. The problem might be the mouse. The card won't load the driver until windows loads but the mouse might be needed before windows loads.

Example of a PCI card with USB ports

wow thanks so much! i really appreciated your help.. thanks. :)
it seems to me that the mouse is the problem.. the store's tester's USB ports were all fried when i tested it on them.. i swear i won't go back to that store anymore.. anyways.. thanks for the info! i'm gonna buy a PCI card for USB ports.. thanks so much again! :)
