In device manager I have an exclamtion mark on Fresco Logic xHCI (USB) root hub, I have tried reloading the driver from different sources to no avail, I have 2 USB devices connected directly to the motherboard sockets internally which do not work, but the USB sockets on the rear of comp seem to work OK, Is this a software issue or hardware.
    Thanks.

    Gigabyte GA-X79S-UP5-WiFi M/b
    Intel 3.5 Ghz CPU.
    32 Gig ram.
    Win 7 64bit

The ordering of your sentences make it difficult to discern what happened. Did you mean to say?:

2 USB ports connected directly to the motherboard suddenly stopped working so I checked them out in Device Manager which show an exclamation mark on Fresco Logic xHCl (USB) root hub. I have tried reloading the drivers from different sources to no avail. I still have 2 functional USB ports. Is this a software or hardware issue?

There are some very smart geeks who will read your post and you need to help them help you. You can do that by providing a bunch of important information about your computer, the programs you're running, hardware settings, etc. To do this, just follow along:
OK, first I need you to download a program called Speccy from the following page:

    http://majorgeeks.com/Speccy_d6358.html

    1. Install the program and don't change any of the settings. Just leave them at their default settings
    2. Run the program and let it analyze your system (takes less than 30 seconds). When it finishes click FILE >>Save As Text
    3. Save the text file to your desktop.
    4. Go to your desktop and open the text file with notepad (just double click on it). Edit out any personal information including serial numbers, then save it.
    5. If you know how to archive files using the ZIP or RAR format then go ahead and archive the text file. If not, then don't worry about it, just leave the text file as it is.
    6. Then go to http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=86880 to learn how to attach a file to your post.
    7. Post another message in this thread with the aforementioned text file attached.
That will give people here something to work with in diagnosing your problem.

Well it seems to have worked.
Just to clarify, the Fresco Logic hub has an exclamation mark showing in devices, I have tried reloading the driver from several sources but it still has the mark, is it a software or hardware problem, do I need it ?

I'm not sure about what you did when you "tried reloading the driver from several sources"
Did you uninstall the drivers from Device Manager, then reinstalled the drivers from an installation disk or an upgrade package that you downloaded? Please elaborate.

    Hi.
I uninstalled in device manager powered down , restart same problem, checked for updated driver from Gigabyte none available, searched the web, states that I have the most recent driver, no update at Microsoft. I also tried reinstalling from M/B disk same result.
So I'm stuck, trying to work out if this is USB 3 and do I need it.

Does your motherboard have USB 3 ports?
Grab a flashlight and look closely at the ports. Is the plastic black or blue?

I looked through your system report and confirmed that the Fresco Logic drivers that you have are for use with a pair of USB 3 ports. However, you also have several USB 2 ports which use generic drivers. If I were you I'd download and install the following program called IObit Driver Booster. It will assess your hardware and your drivers, then inform you which ones need updating, and finally give you the opportunity to download and effectuate the necessary updates.

Just remember to look for, and opt out of, the adware offered during installation of this program. Always create a Restore Point before you update any drivers.
