I'm having a problem I can't seem to fix, when I install anything USB, I get error "Access is denied".

I'm using a PS2 KB ATM. Nothing USB works, I uninstalled the USB drivers hoping they would reinstall on reboot, but it still says "access is denied".

    Any idea?

    OS is XP BJ?

are you logged on as Admin? ( I have done this a few times when forgetting I was on a limited account )

or try install in/from safe mode.

Yes, WinXP Pro SP2. I'm on my account, the only account on the machine. It has Admin privies unless something has changed without my knowledge.

    I will try Safe Mode.

Is everything OK in Device Manger?

I'm in safe mode, when installing the USB drivers I still get "Access is denied". I logged in under Administrator and it did it there as well.

I'm not sure whats going on. It all started when my USB drive wouldnt install, same error but I ignored it because my other one did. Now nothing USB works.

No, all four (USB) controllers have the exclamation points, when I try to manually install drivers it says "Access is denied".

Can you physically unplug everything USB that is not vital, then uninstall the USB controller in Device Manager, reboot and let Windows detect it.

  9. bjgarrick

bjgarrick MajorGeeks Admin - Malware Expert

I will try again, this is what happens everytime I try to install the USB drivers.

If I understand you correctly, there is no point trying to install drivers until you fix up the USB entry in Device Manager.

Until then, as far as Windows is concerned, you don't have USB so can't install drivers.

bjgarrick MajorGeeks Admin - Malware Expert

Yeah, when I say USB drivers I'm referring to the USB Controller drivers. I uninstall these from device manager, reboot and when windows installs it ask for internet access, yes or no it still gives that error.

did you move the pin on your motherboard to enable usb usage?

i dont know if this is the issue, but that's what i had to do when i built my computer. it's like a 3 slot pin with plastic over 2 pins, i had to move it to the left to enable usb I beleive it was, who knows im a noob.

I havn't messed with anything hardware except for plugging things in to the USB port. It's worked for 5 years with no problems, just noticed this problem when I got a new USB jump drive. I plugged in the 2GB key and it worked fine. Few days later, plugged in the 512MB stick and it started the "Access is denied" error. Ignored this because my 2GB worked. Installing a new printer and it gave me "access is denied".

Uninstalled USB so everything would reinstall, "access is denied" when installing anything USB.

This is a driver problem more than likely.

Go into Device Manager and check the driver details and path for USB controllers.

You may have to manually find them and delete them. (obviously back them up)

It sounds to me that there is an incorrect driver/s that is still there and causing this.

Then delete the controller and reboot etc.

  15. Maybe try going to your computer manufacturer's website and se if they have a driver for your USB there. Let us know what comes of that.

You said earlier 512MB stick? What is it exactly?

bjgarrick MajorGeeks Admin - Malware Expert

I think I know what the problem is, I could be wrong but now that I think about it.

A few days ago I had to do a repair reinstall of my OS because of another problem I had, anyway I used my XP disc that has XP SP2 integrated into the OS, my previous install was from my old dell reinstall disc that only had SP1a, I manually updated to SP2.

This is most likely the problem isnt it?

No, I don't think so, but you know your PC better than me.

I'm still of the opinion that it's USB driver related.

How did you go with checking the driver paths? Are they there?

  20. bjgarrick

bjgarrick MajorGeeks Admin - Malware Expert

Yeah, I checked them and it said there was no drivers for this device. The 512MB key is a SanDisk Cruzer Mini.

The 2GB works fine, but I noticed it when I tried the 512 after I used the 2GB.

I seen that issue before on a HP printer the registrys security permissions are all fouled up, HP has a tool for their printers but only for their hardware afaik, if it happened after using the USB key then see if the makers have a similar tool,

but it may help, in respect to their manual instructions, it just may jog someones memory on which part of the registry controls the hardware USB ( HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE but I dont know which area off hand ) as I just cannot locate anything around USB hardware and the above messed up permissions!!!

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...docname=bpu00682&product=79488&dlc=en&lang=en

also maybe a restore of a good known last registry? ( risky )

  22. Have you checked the manufacturer's website like I have stated before?

Registry is very probable as Halo suggested.

I would also look in Add/Remove and uninstall any USB key software.

Event log may or may not help?

  24. If the USB is a pci card that contains ports I would just uninstall all drivers, take the card out and boot the computer without the card so windows sees that no usb is installed. Once that is done you shut down and put the card back in. Then boot up and install the drivers again.

I do believe its in the registry as well, but where to begin is what I don't know.

I have tried some registry edits per the SanDisk site, nothing. I checked out thet site but it really didnt help because I think my problem isnt really the hardware, its the USB controller drivers something is blocking.

I think there is something in the registry preventing me from installing these drivers, but where I have no clue.

I uninstalled the modem just to make sure it wasnt something else. It reinstalled it fine, its just the USB controller drivers it wont install. I do believe it's something in the registry preventing these from being installed, but I dont know where to start looking.

    BJ, do you have a usb.inf file or usbport.inf in C:\WINDOWS\inf ?

    Try right clicking and merge.

System Information in System Tools may also help?

Would the relevent to reset security settings be found at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB?

I think this is likely culprit. Best to reset security settings onthe entire "enum" key, though.

  30. bjgarrick

bjgarrick MajorGeeks Admin - Malware Expert

Did that, rebooted, windows tried to install USB controller drivers but still said "access is denied".

I looked but I didnt see anything related.

  31. bjgarrick

bjgarrick MajorGeeks Admin - Malware Expert

I tried this as well, I gave everything in the registry "Full Control". I am so agravated I deleted the USB key in Enum, still didnt work. I'm about to say the heck with it and reinstall. I hate to but I cant be down much longer.

    Adrynalyne Guest

What I'd actually do is backup HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB

Then, I'd expand the key out, locate all VID folders (random characters after VID) and delete them all.

You have to set permissions to full control(for each VID folder) to nuke them.

    Then reboot and see.

    *cough*

I kind of deleted this key without a backup of it. The USB controller drivers still try to reinstall on reboot but still get the error.

I know I shouldnt have delete it but I was agravated LOL

When I try to import a registry file I get "error accessing the registry". I'm not sure if this is my doings or what.

    Reinstall? lol

    The WHOLE key?

    ROFL :D

I'm not at a Windows PC machine, but, is it possible that any new hardware installed is giving an access denied mesage?

Maybe you should experiement-- try uninstalling the video card, and reinstalling it.

  36. bjgarrick

bjgarrick MajorGeeks Admin - Malware Expert

*cough* Yeah, the whole key. LOL!

I tried this, I did the modem and it reinstalled with no error. Just the USB doing this.

Would another "Repair" fix this or do I need a clean reinstall?

I doubt it would fix anything, but you have nothing to lose really.

Basically, reinstalling is my only solution?

  40. Insomniac

Insomniac Billy Ray Cyrus #1 Fan

Well, I don't have any other solution at this stage unless someone else comes up with something.

Reinstalling isn't guaranteed to fix this either.

I would have the very minimum physically installed, then install the hardware one by one using the latest manufacturers drivers.

  41. bjgarrick

bjgarrick MajorGeeks Admin - Malware Expert

I'm just going to use the registry search script and delete anything referring to my USB drives, see if that helps.

If that doesnt I will start with anything "USB" then see what happens. If nothing else works, I will have to format I guess :(

I'm really sorry for you mate.

I'm just going to try a repair first, and if this doesnt work I will just format and start over.

I tried to delete the SYSTEM registry hive thinking maybe it would reinstall all drivers but, I cant login because the PS2 mouse and board freezes...:(

  45. bjgarrick

bjgarrick MajorGeeks Admin - Malware Expert

I got the PS2 keyboard to work, booted into the console, deleted the SYSTEM hive, copied a fresh one from the "repair" folder. Rebooted, logged in and everything was ok.

Everything works fine now after deleting the SYSTEM hive and replacing it with a fresh copy.

Thanks for all of help and post, I appreciate everyones time with this issue :):)

I'm happy I didnt have to format, if you only could see how much stuff I have on here LOL!

I just needed to get away from it for a while, then that idea popped in my head! I was so frustrated with it I couldnt think, so I got away for a little and it came to me.

My PC is such a piece of shit, next time I have to format, and judging by my computer skills that won't be long, it's going off the back porch.

LOL! I want a new one but right now, right after the holidays it's tough. I want a P4 3GHz at least. I have a 2GHz now, it runs good but not good enough for what all I do. The wife's computer I built her is better than mine, faster CPU at least.

Try booting while holding F8 and choose boot logging. This will load one device at a time and will make a txt log of all the system devices (including USB MOBO controllers and drivers) that will allow you to see what exactly is causing the problem. If its a bad driver, replace it. It may be a MOBO problem. If so, go into BIOS (or find a jumper on the MOBO) and disable onboard USB, then buy a USB 2.0 PCI card.
These cards only have 2 ports so you might have to get a 4 way hub if you have alot of USB devices.
Also, I never saw your response to one of the posts that mentioned looking in the BIOS (repeatedly tap F1, F2, or DELETE while booting) to see if USB is enabled. I've known of BIOS settings that for some unknown reason will change, sometimes after making a change to the system.
Also try to update the BIOS with a BIOS flash.
Run diagnostics on your system. You can do it online (they'll use the internet connection to access your PC and diagnose your system) or use a software program. If you can borrow a diagnostics card, plug it into a PCI slot and boot. It'll display a LED code that you look up to see what the problem is.
    Good luck. DCO
