P4 2.8GHz 1GB ram workstation where I work has USB ports that dont seem to work.. specifically the mouse... optical IBM mouse. The drivers are installed, it seems to have power to the mouse as the light comes on but the mouse doesnt work... tried about 4 different usb ports and none of them worked ... uPnP is enabled and all but it wont detect... reinstalled all the USB controllers but still won't work. We had to plug a PS/2 mouse in and that works ... any ideas what the problem could be? the guy from IT seems to think usb is disabled on the server side...

Is it enabled in your bios ?
Do you have a exclamations point in your hardware manager ?

was it installed before in a different port? my experience says that if its installed in usb port 1 and moved to port 2, it won't work until its plugged back into port 1.
did you install the software before or after plugging in the mouse? we had one here that wouldn't work until the software was installed, even though the instructions said to plug the mouse before installing the software.
can you test the mouse on another computer? maybe the mouse is fubar'd (yes, thats a technical term :))

dude usb is PnP (plug and play) ... yes we tried 2 different mouse ... and it works in another pc. So no the mouse is not "fubar"
    yes the drivers are installed.

plus i've never heard such a thing as installing a mouse into ports seperately and only being able to use it in it's installed port... once the drivers are installed you can plug them into any usb port as like i said, usb is PnP which most people are aware of. The only thing I havn't tried is checking the BIOS for the appropriate settings but if anyone else has any other suggestions?

That's happened to me with a keyboard, when I switched ports with my joystick, nothing like getting to the password prompt and not being able to type anything.

we even tried PS/2 adapter and it didnt work  because the PS/2 mouse that were using works ... but the usb mouse doesnt work using the adapter... so i'm confused because I didnt think the computer could tell the difference.
