    Hello,

I am having USB problems. My computer is not recognizing my external hard drive, also, I have a wireless mouse that it is not recognizing. It keeps giving me the error message "USB Device not recognized, one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows doesn't recognize it. For assistance, click here." I have been using my hard drive for over a year, with no problems, and the wireless mouse for over a month. I have tried troubleshooting all day, I even bought a new wireless mouse! They both just stopped working. Please help!

    THANKS!

    Hey there,

first thought have a look at your device manager have a look for any unusual icons next to the devices... try a restore point if you have this option enabled..

Restored it 2x today that didn't work. Not sure what "unusual devices" to look for under device mgr. I'm there...not sure what I am looking for......

Have you tried using a different USB port on your computer? I had one on my laptop go bad after about 2 years (it still has power, so I use it to charge up my MP3 player, but it won't run my drive anymore). My other ports work fine. So you may want to see if switching to a different port will work.

NOTE: Have your drivers for your external drive and mouse ready (or know where they are on your internal drive), cuz sometimes the computer will think it's a whole new device simply because it's connected to a new port, and ask for the drivers to be installed.

This sounds weird but it has fixed the USB device not recognized error on some computers so it is worth trying.
    1. Power off the computer
    2. Pull the power plug attached to the computer out of the outlet/mains so it is no longer connected to electricity. Keep it unplugged for at least 1/2 hour.
Then: attach to the electricity and turn on the computer with your mouse attached.

I unplugged my computer for a 1/2 hour and now both my external hard drive and wireless mouse work! Thank you soo much! :)

Glad it worked. I know it sounds weird but it has helped some. I'm glad it worked for you.
