is there a program that can take memory in a usb port and use it for ram memory . that would be a real cheap way to increase. your memory. now it sees it as a drive but could it be made to see it as ram?

using ready boost for windows vista
You can use memory from a flash drive in vista using what is known as ready boost you can read more about it by clicking on the link I included

I would love to see about something like that myself.
Be a good use for several 4-8GB thumbdrives just lying around.

I used to use one when I had only 1GB, and it did help, though not dramatically. Once I added another 1GB it ceased to have any noticeable effect.

It doesn't act as additional RAM as it isn't synchronized with the memory bus, it's more like a huge cache - slower than RAM but much quicker than reading from disk.

    Hi

As mentioned Vistas's on is like a cache as USB is Flash Ram and not the system ram we know that on shutdown clears its contents, but as you have XP, Readyboost is not an option but thinking along the same lines as Readyboost, possible is http://www.eboostr.com/ (not free) and using it like Virtual Ram, some have had sucess also with either formatting a USB pen to Fat32 or NTFS and in its properties setting the Optimize for Performance option in Hardware and then adding it to be a system managed Virtual Ram drive, is hit and miss option.

But if you have a SATA HDD then those are faster than USB (USB never really lives upto its reported transfer speeds) so wouldnt be much of a benefit or likewise if you have x86 XP and more than 2GB ram, wouldnt again give much speed benefit, best beneft to speed is actual RAM IMHO.
