I have a toshiba laptop with Windows ME. My problem is that the
unplug/eject icon doesn't appear on the system tray. When I plug
is a usb memory stick, it appears as a drive in "My computer", I
can write/read data from it without a problem, but there is no
    eject button.

I have been able to creat an eject button using a rundll32 script,
so I can stop it, but why doesn't the eject icon appear automatically
in the system tray, is WinME like that? Any ideas?

What exactly do you mean, like the grey/green arrow -like thing that you see in win xp? What's the problem, can't you just remove the memory stick and it'll go away?

    The grey/green arrow never appears.

I know what you mean by the unplug icon because you get those in XP and Win 2000, but I have ME on my home machine and I can honestly say that I've never seen that icon on this machine. I don't think ME does that.

I finally found the anwer. The "safely remove hardware" icon in the notification area (system tray) is for USB and PCMCIA. The control to switch on or off is in the PCMCIA button in the Control Panel. (at least in my laptop).

If you disable write-behind caching for the USB drive, then it may not need the "safely remove" step before unplugging.
