    Hello My Geeky friends,

I have changed the bios on my 3 year old dell to start from USB. :)

Installed puppy linux with unetbootlin to usb pendrive.:)

    Computer totally ignores it.
    :cry

    Any ideas.

Re-do the pendrive because it sounds like you haven't made it properly bootable. The computer does not see it as a boot device so it just ignores it and moves on to the next bootable device, your hard drive.

:)Ok. Sounds like a good idea.

Just to be sure I do this right can you give me a link to some good directions?

    Thanks

Sorry, I have yet to do this myself, simply because I don't think I know what needs to be on the USB drive to make it properly bootable. If I find the details, I'll post back.

Using unetbootlin properly set up my USB pendrive. But....

    Here is an update.

I did an experiment after I posted. I tried this new USB drive on my new laptop computer. It booted with no problem at all and worked beautifully.

The unetbootin program is great. I suggest it for anyone wanting to boot something from a pendrive. Using Unetbootin is easier than following the directions on the Pendrive site. It handles all the problems about format type, and etc. So nice. You just run the file from the download site.

But my 3 year old Dell still ignores this same usb drive even though the boot to usb drive is number one on the list in bios.

Does this mean Dell might have a hardware problems that could cause this?

I once had an old Dell would not run a live Linux disc in the CD drive. I was told that meant the motherboard was dying.

I wondered if this could be a similar symptom.

A while back I was trying to boot the Active killDisk App from CD. Never had a problem booting from CD before but this was refusing to. Would ignore and then continue to load Windows!! Juggled the HD up and down the Boot priority without success.
Then I removed the HD from boot priority and dumped it in exclude from boot order. VOILA..
    Wonders never cease ;)

    Cheers...

    Thanks sikvik,

That was a really nifty idea that I never would have thought of.

So I tried it. No go. Computer said there was no bootable devise.

Is reloading or upgrading the Bios a possiblity?
