usb

i think this is a hardwear issue but i'm not sure

on my parents computer they have 3/4 usbs in the back that work and they have 2 in the front that dont

it came that way when the got it

how can i get them to work?

Those front USB ports need to be connected to pins on the motherboard. Perhaps the wires in that computer are simply not connected. If you want to explore this, you'll need to determine where the pins are located. Do you have any documentation on the motherboard? If not, you may be able to find a manual on the Internet. If you post the exact make and model of the computer and/or motherboard, someone here can probably help you search for documentation if you have trouble finding it.

If the front ports are PROPERLY connected, perhaps the motherboard is faulty. The problem can be remedied by installing a USB PCI card such as Rosewill PCI to 2+1 USB2.0 Cards Model RC-100 - Retail ; some such cards only add ports to the back (usually 4) but this one adds two ports to the back and also has pins for two front ports. Thus, it may allow getting those front ports working.

If you can not get the front ports working but need access at front for convenience, you could get a USB extension cord which can be plugged in at back and reaches out to the front.

 

i know they hav an intel P4 but i'm guessing that isint enough correct

Right, that's not enough. The exact model of motherboard is needed. If you have no info about it, you could download EVEREST Free Edition 2.20 and run it to get a very detailed report on the computer.

You might also be able to locate the pins by taking a magnifying glass and searching for "USB" in tiny letters on the motherboard, next to a set of pins. You'll also need to know how the pins are numbered and that may also be indicated on the board.
